How many video games have YOU completed?

I recently have compiled a list of all of the games I have ever finished. I know I definitely have missed some of them but I am continuously adding to it as I remember them.

So it got me thinking about if any of you people, have compiled anything similar and would like to share with us. I would be interested to see what type of games people play here on the forum.

Now I do have a few rules to follow:

EDIT*

  1. All games must be completed at least one time (the story mode) without using any cheats of any description.

  2. “Multiplayer Only” Games can be included if you have played more than 20 hours of it.

  3. Remakes are allowed to be counted as separate games from the original game, but remasters and HD versions are not allowed to be counted as separate from the original!

  4. DLC story lines and games can be counted

  5. Different ports of the game are only allowed if the port is different enough. For example: (“The World is Not Enough” on PS1 and N64 are completely different games.)

  6. Games that can not be “finished” in a way are allowed if you played over 10 hours. (see survival games)

  7. Mod games, and fan made games are allowed.

  8. Co-op only games are allowed

*9. Watching someone else complete the game via a “playthrough” or “let’s play” on a video streaming site or on the couch with someone else sadly doesn’t count as completing a game.

If you have any other questions or come up with any other discrepancy’s in the rules let me know, and they can be changed.

I will start with my current list of every game I have ever “completed”:

Woah!! I completed few games… Thimblweed Park, GTA vice City, PvZ, Transformers… That’s it I suppose… And yeah Distraint too…
I am a noobie

Well, that likely cuts things down by at least 50 %. A typical enough recent example is Gemini Rue, in which I missed a shard of glass (read: 2 pixels), which I looked up in a walkthrough. I finished Zak McKracken without a walkthrough, but modern ScummVM saves might well be considered cheating by '80s people.

I don’t have a list like this. The closest is my GOG “completed” tag, which I’ll copy here (but it doesn’t actually include all games I’ve got on GOG which I’ve completed):

  1. Zak McKracken
  2. Loom
  3. Indiana Jonesⓡ and the Fate of Atlantis™
  4. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
  5. Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within (I think I used a walkthrough to figure out what to do in the final action section)
  6. The Dig (I think I used a walkthrough for something; don’t recall what, not the bone puzzle though)
  7. Broken Sword
    a. Broken Sword: Director’s Cut
  8. Broken Sword 2
    a. Broken Sword 2: Remastered
  9. The Longest Journey (I think I used a walkthrough at least twice, but not for the apparently infamous rubber ducky puzzle)
  10. Railroad Tycoon 3 (and 2, not on GOG)
  11. Syberia 2 (and 1)
  12. Prince of Persia (2008)
  13. Secret of Monkey Island
    a. SE
  14. Monkey Island 2
    a. SE
  15. Gemini Rue
  16. Costume Quest
  17. The Walking Dead (season 1, 2, Michonne, New Frontier)
  18. Mark of the Ninja
  19. Primordia
  20. Wolf Among Us
  21. Dreamfall Chapters (and Dreamfall: TLJ, that one not on GOG)
  22. Technobabylon
  23. Oxenfree
  24. Layers of Fear
  25. Shardlight
  26. Thimbleweed Park (I used the in-game hints once or twice, basically game mechanics issues)
  27. Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series
  28. Gorogoa
  29. FoxTail (in-dev)
  30. Chuchel
  31. Unforeseen Incidents
  32. Unavowed
  33. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
  34. Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30
  35. The Blackwell games

Then there are cases like Wolfenstein 3D where I finished one or two episodes, but not the whole game.

Let’s also go through my Steam library:

  1. Tomb Raider (2013)
  2. DmC: Devil May Cry
  3. Grand Theft Auto (or the first city, anyway — also I’ve never tried the Steam version)
  4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (in full)
  5. Her Story
  6. Layers of Fear
  7. Max Payne
  8. Probably all of the Total War games up to and including Napoleon, except for Medieval 1
  9. Rise of the Tomb Raider
  10. Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  11. Civilization III
  12. Tomb Raider I
  13. At least one out of Tomb Raider: Legend or Underworld

Some of the most enjoyable games obviously missing above:

  1. Dune
  2. Dune 2000
  3. Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Tiberian Sun, RA2; also C&C3, RA3
  4. Discworld Noir (+Discworld 1 & 2)
  5. Rollercoaster Tycoon
  6. Age of Empires (+Rise of Rome, II, Age of Kings, Mythology)
  7. Entomorph: Plague of the Darkfall
  8. Warlords II Deluxe

Taking a few entries off @dangerouslee’s list:

  1. Larry 5
  2. Warcraft 3 + expansion
  3. Starcraft 1 & 2
  4. Hitman 2, possibly
  5. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3; there are few games I completed more than that one
  6. The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth I and II
  7. Call of Duty, CoD 2 was still playable, everything since is borefest galore except in MP; most recent one I tried is Black Ops
  8. Lego Star Wars
  9. Pokemon Yellow

Maybe I should start a spreadsheet or something, try to create a little more order and a vague semblance of completion…

PS Oh yeah, and I spent a lot of time on Diablo 2.

Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising. Fantastic game.

That’s what I am currently thinking. Would allow ordering by year and genre, and one could also keep track of all the unfinished games, and just filter them for the purpose of this list. (That’s a task for the evening, though. Housework awaits …)

There are also some places like https://glitchwave.com/ and https://backloggery.com/. I haven’t tried them. but at least theoretically they could offer advantages like game library import and easy game adding, provided they offer something like CSV export.

Edit:
https://www.grouvee.com/

Edit 2: Backloggery does not currently offer export. It says it’s planned.

Edit 3: Glitchwave is not taking new members. That leaves Grouvee and less likely HowLongToBeat as potential spreadsheet alternatives.

Edit 4: Grouvee supports export! But is it any good compared to a spreadsheet… let’s give it a quick try.

Edit 5: hm, I don’t know… on the plus side you can search for a game and click add, on the downside the interface is… I don’t know, touch idiocy or something?

The export has JSON in it. Looks like this:

id,name,shelves,platforms,rating,review,dates,statuses,genres,franchises,developers,publishers,release_date,url,giantbomb_id
51040,Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun,"{""Played"": {""url"": ""https://www.grouvee.com/user/Frenzie/shelves/501425-played/"", ""date_added"": ""2019-01-19T11:19:51Z""}}",{},5,,[],[],"{""Strategy"": {""url"": ""https://www.grouvee.com/games/?genre=strategy""}, ""Real-Time Strategy"": {""url"": ""https://www.grouvee.com/games/?genre=real-time-strategy""}}",{},"{""Mimimi Productions"": {""url"": ""https://www.grouvee.com/games/?developer=mimimi-productions""}}","{""Daedalic Entertainment"": {""url"": ""https://www.grouvee.com/games/?publisher=daedalic-entertainment""}}",2016-12-06,https://www.grouvee.com/games/51040-shadow-tactics-blades-of-the-shogun/,53650

As I was looking for some inspiration on which headers to put in my spreadsheet, I came across Completionator. It seems to tick all the right boxes:

  1. The interface isn’t a total disaster
  2. GOG/Steam import, although GOG import isn’t working out for me atm.
  3. Sane Excel export, but I’m not sure why filters aren’t enabled on the headers by default. AutoFilter is just one click away of course.

http://www.completionator.com/

It looks like even if you don’t want want to use this website, at the very least it’s still a good way to kickstart a decent spreadsheet with your GOG and Steam collection.

A screenshot of the Excel export filtered on my Tomb Raider games:

A quick test with some older titles shows that grouvee knows them, while completionator doesn’t (e.g. Shadowlands, Phantasie III).

Given that it should be fairly trivial to turn JSON into CSV, I might stick to the former. Thanks for your investigation though!

JSON is simple enough to work with (at least as some kind of starting point) but I really didn’t care for that site’s interface. It’s all the horrors of touch.

I can confirm your findings with a quick search for the first random well-known old game I searched for though, odd.

Jetfighter on Grouvee

Jetfighter on Completionator

It just occurred to me that I didn’t check if a site like Mobygames does collection stuff. [Edit: it does, but I don’t see an obvious export. There is some kind of API but that just looks like it’s about game metadata.]

Does it count if I watched someone else finish it on youtube

That’s probably “cheating” as per the OP. For your personal administration, just call it “finished the story” or something.

Haha :joy: it definitely doesn’t count, I will change the rules to reflect that

Dang, my list is gonna take a serious hit with this new rule change

This will take a while… this will take forever!!!

Yes, I finished Impossible Mission too (albeit on the nintendo DS)

As I have already started compiling a spreadsheet with all games I still need to play/complete, I can extend my completed tab with all the games I still remember completing. I think the rule spending over 10 hours playing but not reaching the end (if there ever even was one to start with… Pacman, anyone?) might cause the game list to be significantly longer… so I might mark these games as “wasted a precious part of my childhood on…” instead.

Super impressive list with loads of diversity, I love the year of release sorting! I may copy you on that one!

That’s ok though, I am totally up for big long lists that include games like pacman… etc (I suppose it’s just up to you how many games you want to include though)

The rules are more guidelines than anything, if you want to justify different games being part of the list for different reasons, we should be open to that!

I’m not an 80’s person, so I don’t consider save “scummVMing” as cheating!

Great list as well mate! It’s great fun seeing what others have played.

Finishing Zak without using a joystick to drive the cursor around and without banging your head against a wall because you got a DISK LOAD ERROR is also considered cheating.

Actually, not having to enter the Exit Visa codes for international flights in Zak, is really cheating- as that was the copy protection.

Good to see you’ve got your priorities right!

It’s interesting, too. The oldest game I finished is from '86. My list (finished or not) has games from every year up to 2018, with the notable exception of 2003 and 2004. I must have been busy otherwise during that time, or it was a particular bad time for PC gaming (at least if you had my taste ).

Edit: having the data in a spreadsheet also allows some fun analysis. Here’s the number of games by year released and genre (though I guess by year completed would be even more meaningful. Also, I was quite liberal with the genre, trying to keep the different categories to a minimum)

I think it´ll be hard to find games that are much older than that because the concept of “finishing” a game wasn´t really established very early on.
