Thanks for these links! I visited that page and it says that it adds also “Spiffy close-up.”. Where did they take the close-up from? As far as I know there was a close-up of Spiffy on the box but that version doesn’t resemble at all the dog in the SCUMM bar.
Also, I don’t understand what’s the difference between the “ultimate” edition and playing the special edition in “classic mode”.
Spiffy:
you can choose a pixelated version of the “evil spiffy” of the SE, or you can choose a scan of that old temporary EGA Spiffy we all saw on the back of the box back then, or you can choose to have no Spiffy close-up.
Here I try to summarize the difference between the versions:
MI1 CD 1992 version has improved sound (CD tracks containing hi-quality MIDI sampling and live recorded SFX).
MI1 SE classic mode has the old sound of the VGA floppy version, with MIDI sampled through the user’s audio card, and (If I remember well), no talkies.
The ultimate talkie version puts the music of SE (which is even better than that of the CD version) and the talkies from SE on the graphics of the VGA version.
And many bugs are corrected.
Oh, and you can se Spiffy, of course.
So, I think it’s a big deal.
Unluckily MI2 ultimate isn’t the same… it has original sound (not the one from SE) and MI2SE in classic version HAS talkies, so I don’t see the point in having a MI2 ultimate edition. Maybe is it still work in progress?
As far as I know the missing Spiffy close-up was recreated based on the screenshot on the box.
I think I prefer the original sounds.
Also MI2 Ultimate Edition runs on ScummVM (and even DOS), including all operating systems it supports and low-end systems.
A lot of bugs have been fixed.
Don’t get me wrong: There is nothing wrong with playing MI2:SE to try the new graphics and listen to the commentary, but the Ultimate Edition is my ultimate favourite.
It says Beta Version, but unless @LogicDeLuxe thinks about adding the audio commentary it looks very complete to me.
No hint book in my box. Only an advertisement (size of a postcard) with the offer to order the German hint book for 10 DM (+3 DM postage) from Softgold. I haven’t done that.
Yes, but not only. As I wrote, you can choose to have a spiffy based on that of SE, or no close-up at all.
I’d like to have the possibility to choose between the original music and the enhanced one of the SE, like in MI1UTE you can choose between original, CD or SE music.
And, since I loved the adding of the Spiffy close-up, I’d also love, one day, to see somebody redrawing in 256 colos the sunset on the docks at the beginning of MI1…
Obviously this is a subliminal message for @LogicDeLuxe
Since mine contains the hint book I guess it’s a later release, although not much later.
My box contains a Softgold warranty card, filled out by me but never sent
This is not possible. The engine couldn’t handle the SE soundtrack. It is much different to what it was in Monkey 1.
I want to offer a GM track like in Monkey 1, though.
To be out of beta, I have to fix at least the bug with the coffin where the game can freeze.
And I like to introduce some kind of indication that the game is still doing something when Bart or Fink is waiting for the music cue to come. That can be up to a few seconds, which confused some people.
Also the “match voice acting”-mode is still incomplete.
