Maniac Mansion released on Steam

Yep. I think what I’m trying to use it for is wrong though. I’ll play for a bit more and see if I can figure it out.

What were you thinking of then, maybe you are not wrong?

Are you absolutely sure I need to move it two times, not three?

How many dimes are in the pig again(I think it´s four in total right?)? Those plus the one on the floor of Dr Fred´s room should be enough to turn once in the wrong direction and then back to the correct one.

I think it would help, if you just say what you see through the telescope(maybe write descpriptions for each direction down or something).

I also belive you cannot waste a dime by attempting to turn into a direction the telescope won´t move into anymore, so turn as far as you can.

There were only two in the pig – I went back and double-checked.

I’m assuming I should be turning it to the right based on the fact that two turns to the left results in nothing happening – when I click ‘use telescope’ after that it appears to start a cut scene, but then resumes (unless that’s a bug).

This can´t be right.

Did you see this?

The correct position is on the opposite end, so you´re correct with the right direction.

I saw that after one turn, yep.

Glad I’ve got the correct position, even if it’s possibly not for the reason I thought

Okay, so I thought it was to look through the window at the four-digit safe code. But after two right turns I can only see a drainpipe and half the window, so that can’t be correct. Good theorising though, right?

One more turn!

That’s three turns then! That’s what I thought. I need more coins :disappointed_relieved:

If you used everything from the pig and the one from Dr Freds room then that was it for now then…no more coins. :frowning:

I must’ve used more coins than I thought :slightly_frowning_face: I’ll go back and reinstate an earlier save.

I’m still pleased I figured that out though :facepunch:

It says facepunch but I´m gonna interpretate that as a fist bump for now! :open_mouth:

You´re on the right track anyway. Report back what you find in the safe!

From its initial position you can move it one left or two right. 4 positions total.

There were three dimes in it.

But reverting to an older savegame shouldn’t be a problem. (If you really know what you are doing you can win the game in about half an hour.)

I wouldn´t pressure her like that yet. There is still room for some bad mistakes.

David Byrne voice: Baaaaaad mistakes!

Finished it  it took me about an hour once I opened the safe. Here it is in slow motion:

1. I restarted from an earlier save point (luckily I saved quite frequently!)
2. Opened the moneybank again and realised that, yes, there are indeed three dimes (I must’ve spent two testing the telescope, which explains why it was in the centre position)
3. Used the telescope to get the safe code
4. Opened the safe, removed the sealed envelope and saved my game before I ripped it open, as I had a feeling that might scupper me
5. Scuppered myself, reloaded save
6. Put the envelope in the microwave with the water, forgetting it was radioactive (I knew not to do that, but thought I had fresh water)
7. Reloaded and used water from the tap instead
8. Put the tape in the envelope and added the stamps (which stuck this time – that didn’t really make sense to me) and posted it
9. At this point Dr Fred plays the arcade again
10. That prompted me to use my quarter in the game he just played, and quickly memorise one of the codes (luckily the first one worked?!)
11. Collected the contract and got the green tentacle on my side
12. Fannied around with those radio tubes again, hoping the tentacle would help me
13. After the power-down cut scene, opened the lab door
14. Got quite far with the timed sequence the first time, but not far enough
15. Second time, the timer actually stopped (intentional or buggy?) allowing me to get that bit further (I couldn’t work out how to start the car, doh!)

Overall I enjoyed it, and glad I finally got round to playing it from beginning to end! I need some distance from it to reflect properly, but initial thoughts:

Pros:

  • good story
  • good artwork and scenery (I love all the different rooms, and little details)
  • great use of cutscenes especially as it introduced the concept
  • amusing dialogue

Cons:

  • I found some puzzles a bit disjointed
  • depending on the chosen characters, quite a few events, inventory items and playable areas are misleading or redundant (I could’ve spent hours pursuing false leads if I hadn’t checked some things on here)
  • some unforgiving dead ends (made more palatable with save slots, though!)

Oh, and another pro being the AWESOME MUSIC. Go on, let’s all have another listen

So now you can replay it with other characters every year (or two) allowing yourself to forget some puzzles…

What’s next? Did you ever play Zak McKracken?

Conglaturations, you just completed a great game! A winner is you!

And seems like you took the whole experience in as well. That being doing everything wrong on the way that you can do wrong, no first MM playthrough is complete without that!

Great! It was interesting following someone with p’n’c adventure experience playing this game the first time.

Forgetting puzzles won’t work for me but it’s still a great idea.
Also there aren’t just other characters waiting but also other versions to play (v2/EGA, Deluxe).

That one might be the most interesting due to some minor gameplay differences (paint remover) also it´s free. Or should still be at at least.

Try to finish MM with one or two characters dead, and watch the alternative finale
