Maniac Mansion released on Steam

Haha, I might do!

No I didn’t - it’s probably the one I’m least familiar with. I’ll add it to the list, but I have a few others I need to play first (including the games @LowLevel awarded me for the pictures quiz!)

Oooooh! I didn’t know that was a thing…

It was nice having the option of asking you guys for subtle help, too. Even if it means exposing my ineptitude  I’d love to be on the other side of that actually (anyone fancy playing Space Quest?!)

All I know about that is that I really shouldn´t walk to the right at the very beginning…

Are you joking? MM is very complicated. But funny. And it’s funny to help somebody in this way

  • An alternate and very risky way to get rid of the meteor is feeding it to Audrey 2.

  • You can get alternate endings by killing any kid and another by killing specifically Dave before completing the game.

  • Michael can befriend Weird Ed and get him to help.

  • A much easier way to get rid of the meteor offers Bernard.

  • You can get a very different ending by going with Wendy´s solution

  • You can get a very special ending by cleverly using a combination of Wendy´s and Bernards abilities this also requires some good timing.

Holy shit, I didn’t know MM had so many variables. I don’t think there was any adventure game that got close to this.

Oh good, I’m glad that’s not just me

Ooh, that sounds fun. Why is it risky? Also how do you get out of the lab/garden area? It didn’t look like you could.

Me neither. I guess multicharacter games have that added potential (like The Cave).

Yes, even by todays standards it´s pretty unique.

Because it´s really easy to run out of time. You have to leave the garage/garden area, walk through the dinging room and kitchen and all the way up to the top floor to the room where the plant is. It´s really easy to run the timer out that way. And of course you can leave the area, why couldn´t you? The concrete slab you asked about earlier, is the exit of the lab from there on you can move to where ever you like.

The second time round, when I completed it, there was no timer and I could take my time wandering around with the meteor. I thought that was odd. Maybe a bug in this version?

I couldn’t open the gate - it was locked and none of the keys worked.

Really? Not even an alarm? The timer isn´t visible anyway but when you hear the alarm it should mean it takes maybe 90 seconds to 2 minutes till the house blows up.

That´s odd, it shouldn´t be locked actually(a key doesn´t exist). That would create a new dead end since if you accidentally started the car early (try it, the result is fun) feeding it to the plant is the only option you have at this point unless you play with Bernard.

Yes, but only in the C64 version. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Which ones? (We need names! :))

:raising_hand_man:
I played some Space Quest games a long time ago. Time to replay.

Doesn’t Dr. Fred tells you how much time is left?

Don’t you need a key to start the car? Or open the garage door? AFAIR there was something with a key. But I have only played the C64 version.

Ich brauche mehr…oh wait I did that one already.

Initially yes, I think. But there isn´t a visible timer going down or anything as you walk through the house.

You need the key to start the car. The garage door you open with your mighty trained arms after having used the lifting machine in the mummy room. The garden fence that connects the garage with the pool area isn´t supposed to be locked at any point in the game. That would be new to me.

She wasn’t playing the NES version…
So another version she can play in a year! Plus also the Famicom version

I know that every guide says that was only possible in the NES version. I tested that. Not true.

I really wonder how she would react to the constant music. That makes me nervous! Also the lack of scrolling. I know that version is really popular and I rented it back in the day. But…meh…

Even in the C64 version?

Possible, you might have to tweak the game speed not all versions run at the same speed so some might make it virtually impossible to reach the plant in time. However I believe the possibility to feed is always there. People might think it´s only possible in the NES version because that one runs a bit slower, I don´t know.

Yep. I’ve just played that section again and can confirm the following: if I keep moving during Dr Fred’s dialogue and go straight through and put on the hazmat suit, go through the door, turn off the switch and pick up the meteor without stopping to hear him out, the timer never starts!

On my first go it kept reminding me how much time was left and there was beeping and such. The last two times, none of that, and I could go around at my leisure.

If only this forum existed during playtesting!

Yeah, I assumed it was so people don’t waste time going back into the mansion.

Yep, the best one!

Yes! Please do so I can feel like the omniscient one this time

Yep, as Milan says it’s for the car (and also to open the trunk) but it doesn’t work in the gate – none of the keys do.

PS I’ve given up spoilering my text on this thread. If anyone new pops in here they’ll probably be put off by all these ramblings anyway.

This section is packed with glitches. I´ve encountered one where when you are on the left side when Dr. Fred sets the timer the camera zooms back to his side of the room and can´t be moved to the right anymore bascially trapping you there with no means to reach the door. It also assumes Sandy was a staircase giving you the completly useless but hilarious ability to walk up and down on her.

That’s hilarious! As if poor Sandy doesn’t get a rough enough deal.
