Narrative-based "adventurous" games: have you played them?

Sorry for hijacking the thread and thx for making a more suitable one. The games i suggested definitely are a lot more puzzle based. Only the already mentioned “Witness” fits in both categories.
See you on the other side…

If you don’t find those too cartoonish, then give it a try. It’s linear and often restricted to only a handful of rooms accessible at the same time, so it might not be your thing. But if it’s okay for you, definitely go for the sequel! Do I really need to mention the name again? I’m sure you can puzzle it out

Didn’t know any of these, but that reminded me about “else heart.break()”, Definitely fits the narrative category, but there’s also plenty of coding to be had. Puzzle-solving through coding, mostly, but there’s also a bit of exploration and talking to NPCs.

Hm, I can’t remember it, they really should have chosen a more memorable name!

Don’t worry, currently there isn’t any drastic moderation here and we all tend to get off-topic all the time. But I try my best to avoid this (aaand failed again)

I’m currently playing “Hotel Dusk” :relaxed:
It’s narrative-based, the puzzles are easy and guided. The game is linear (after all, it’s an intruguing story) but it’s beautiful, really. And its “Take On Me” style, is something uncommon.
OK, let’s go to uncover the truth!

I like the graphic style of Hotel Dusk and the fact that puzzles are easy is not an intrinsically negative aspect, for me. I could give it a try, in the future. Thanks for mentioning this game!

Well, it was already in my wishlist but reading your opinion motivated me to have a look at some gameplay and now I’m pretty hooked by it. I think that I could even promote it to the top of the games that I would like to play in the next weeks (time permitting), so the main question now is: is it worth 20 euros?

I don’t necessarily need to wait for a sale, but I wonder if the story of the game is good as its graphic style. If that’s the case, I can definitely pay the full price.

One kind of narrative-based games that I don’t see mentioned in this thread is Japanese visual novels like Danganronpa. I don’t know these games very well but it is my understanding that they are strongly based on narrative and that the player has to solve some puzzles or mini-games, to advance.

I had a look at Danganronpa and the story is related to murders and investigation. Ace Attorney comes to mind as a first possible similar game but I think that the gameplay of the two games are quite different.

Another game of this kind has recently been funded on Kickstarter. Its name is “Minotaur” and the developers define it as a “point and click visual novel”.

Have you played games of this kind?

Never pay more than 20 bucks for a computer game

No, but seriously. It IS a good game. I can’t define if it’s “worth” it, it was worth to me, but monetary value is often a thing that depends on too many personal variables.

I can only tell you I loved the game really hard and I spent a lot of time thinking about it.

And yes, the story is pretty freaking good.

Ace Attorney series were about € 30,00 each (more or less the same in $$), but it’s worth.
I would have paid the same amount for Thimbleweed Park too, of course

I actually very rarely pay more, mostly because I don’t play a lot of AAA games, or I wait for the humble bundle or the steam sale. Probably the only games I acquire immediatly are all indy

It seems my cup of tea. I’ve purchased it and I’ll try to play a bit on the weekend.

Thanks!

In Spirit of Justice, I’m stuck on Case 3. I can’t remember exactly where I am right now without looking at a walkthrough, but it’s during trial, during an Insight, and there’s something about how the victim was actually killed inside the hidden cave, and moss-covered stones are also part of the answer. I can’t figure out which scene in the Insight and which statement to present.

So how are you liking “Hotel Dusk”?

Finished Hotel Dusk yesterday!
How sad it is…
Liked, now it’s time for the sequel, “Last Window”.

I remember, it’s one of the hardest reasonings.
I’ll give you a tiny hint… you should concentrate on the “smell” sensation and on the place of the rite (“sight”).
In your court records, well… you have to present some … information, more than evidence!

I have finally spent a couple of hours playing Firewatch and I’m really enjoying it.

The only issue that I have is that I prefer wandering around to admire the beautiful environment instead of doing useful stuff.

I finished “Last Window” today! Great story, discrete puzzles and a really good one (the Condor key inside the carillon ).
Minimal graphic, it’s a good novel to read.
Thank you for the heads up.

So do you eventually meet someone in firewatch?

I’m at the very beginning of the game, yet. But I have briefly exchanged a few words with two people who were not physically near to me.

I could be wrong, but it seems a game that focuses a lot on the concept of solitude and isolation. In this way the few encounters that you have play a special role in the narrative.
