Was Monkey 2 a sequel to Monkey 1 actually? Ok, it’s titled “Monkey Island 2”, but it has a story of its own.

I would say that it can be considered a sequel. While the events of MI2 don’t take place immediately after the ending of MI1, they happen after MI1.
