Ron Gilbert is having fun building a top-down RPG engine

WAR has never been so much fun…
and this group (Press Play On Tape) did it in a more funny way!

There are dozens of these on Steam…? For example “To the Moon”:

Ok, that has better graphics than Cannon Fodder.

If this is true, I have to cancel my appointments. But are you sure? That one looks more like “combat-50, exploration 40, puzzles 10”.

How can you tell something as precise as that just by looking at a steam page?! :exploding_head:

You’re right, that’s the kind of game that you never know if combat is 49 or 51%

The mix varies between those games. I haven’t played those games because I don’t like the graphics style and the RPG UI. But I’m sure you will find a game that fits your needs.

Regarding “To The Moon”: It is known as a “top down adventure”. If I follow the reviews it’s just an adventure without combat.

/edit: According to Wikipedia “To the Moon has no battle system (aside from a joke battle near the beginning), inventory system or party system.”

I was skeptical because I had seen this:

But now I am extremely interested…

(if that was the joke, it was a bad idea to put it in the first steam screenshots…)

Looks like this is the “joke battle near the beginning”.

Don’t forget that there are other similar games, for example “A Bird Story”:

instant buy!

If you want more of them, just follow the “more like this” links on Steam. But have a closer look: Some of these games have a combat system.

This is NOT my next project! I am not building this game for any other reason than it’s fun and clears my mind. It will never be released.

I vote for calling it “AdVaporVenture” then.

We are just discussing where this might possibly eventually sometimes in an alternative universe could lead to. Or have I overlooked something…?

Why do you categorically exclude this? If it turns out to be fun and/or a really great game: Why not?

Well, more clearly: it will never be released in this form. All the art is stuff I got online. If it was released, it would take on a radically different look, but the odds of it being released are close to zero.

Maybe to be completely pressure free?

When you say “I might change my mind later on” from the get go do you really change your mind, then?

I can handle low probabilities. That’s what I did with your MI3 all my life. That’s OK.

…we are just teasing Ron

Well, there’s Dreamweb.

The story and style of Dreamweb are absolutly fantastic. But the fact you can literally pick up
every useless cigarette bud while having limited inventory space can make it frustrating. Also about halfway through the hacking and puzzle solving is completly interchanged with almost every remaining action being “use gun on person”, that certainly is…different. Great but flawed game I think.

I thought it was an interesting take on kleptomania present in our favorite genre. Suddenly you have to search for objects that you need, instead of just taking everything. It’s more realistic. Is it better? Probably not, but I wouldn’t mind other games (especially more serious in tone) taking that route. I agree with you on the rest of design of Dreamweb though. It goes down in quality after the first chapter. Still, it’s a game worth playing - and it’s freeware now!
