Yay! A new Ron Gilbert game.

I will wait for the Switch release, though.

It looks great for playing on a Switch. I hope it has couch co-op, too.

Death by Scrolling just came out! I got my copy. I’m curious to know if I’ll like it

From a controls standpoint, you only use the directional arrows, plus a button for sprint. There are no other buttons to press. There is autofire and auto-aim. So you only need to concentrate on avoiding obstacles. This simplifies everything and makes playing very enjoyable. To select the weapon you want to use, there isn’t a dedicated button. You choose the weapon simply by walking over it (and automatically drop the previous weapon). The gameplay is therefore pleasant, especially if you choose the “almost relaxing” difficulty level.

Not all of the game has scrolling. There are “safe zones” where you have time to explore and talk to people.

The game can seem frustrating until you understand that dying doesn’t matter, and gathering gold doesn’t matter. Only gathering gems matters, because they are the only persistent things when you die. With the gems, you become increasingly powerful (by purchasing cards), and initially, you should concentrate only on this.

That’s a hint Ron gave three days ago:

yeah if you’re not used to roguelites i can see it being frustrating.

i’m enjoying it so far. haven’t played it enough to say much more than that. i do wish the grim reaper would spawn differently. sometimes ill be at the top of the map and he’ll just pop up and wreck me. i guess it’s to dissuade players from being near the top? i think it would be better and more fun/pretty if a crack developed in the earth that you can see for a second or so before he pops out there.

I made it to the top 1510 players on my first three runs.
Then I quit feeling less happy with my gaming skills than before starting the game.
Nice soundtrack, though.

I have not got it yet either, as I am waiting/hoping for a release on GOG.

I haven’t made up my mind yet regarding Steam and this game. I don’t avoid it per se but I do prefer GOG.

I finally finished a full run, maybe I suck but I found it challenging. I like the game but it’s lacking some depth and diversity in terms of weapons and abilities. The graphics are really great. Definitely happy with the purchase, hopefully it comes to other platforms like GOG

I agree, the soundtrack it’s worth the playing.

I finished level 6, I want to get enough money to let at least one character go on that boat

Full run as in all characters crossed? Or one character?

I crossed two now: Bucket and the first (what’s her name) Spoiler: the second one is 50% more expensive to cross, and I think it will keep building up, so it might be wise to save the easiest character for last

In all leaderboards (gold, distance, kills and bombs), I am around #300 now

It is on endless repeat though…but you are not allowed the mental bandwidth to really listen to it anyway while running for your life

It sounds like the gold bag “ca-ching!” sound effect is reused from Scurvy Scallywags

Spoiler-y gameplay tips I learned the hard way:

The spikes and switches: you can also walk over spikes (and lose some HP… still better than death by Scrolling while you run back from a switch

you can also walk into the fire for a few seconds, which you need to do to reach items sometimes

Don’t fear the reaper. Sometimes he will block the only narrow path forward and you might not be equipping a bow or some ranged attack. Just attack him straight on fast enough (sprint!) and you will knock him senseless before he can swing his scythe

Just one character across, the bow person. Who do you think is the easiest is? I picked the bow character because it seemed easiest…

Great tips for new players as well. Especially the trap damage, also worth noting that when you cross over spikes they push down, so if you have to exit over them, you’re only taking damage one time in total.

Pastor Paul, because he runs fast and doesn’t attack except for a stunning stone, which you should definitely get once he gets tired of being a pacifist On my first couple of game sessions I always tried the new character once unlocked and I got the closest to gathering 5K of gold with him.
Might have also been my own learning curve.
I haven’t tried the rich kid (Chad?) yet although he has been unlocked for quite some time now. I’ll probably use him once I got all the others across.

I finished all characters on standard difficulty except for Chad now.
The problem was I had to try a LOT of times to get the archer across, and after playing for what must have been four or five hours one night (followed by giving a go with Pastor Paul - and then one more and also getting him across on the same session), I got a bit tired of the game for the next weeks, at least.

It is fun for a run or two (or five), not for fifty in a row.

Another tip: do not give in to your greed

the banker island with all the gold pots is filled with thieves that will cost you more than you can pick up… maybe there is a special weapon to kill them first?
