All about bricks

I also have that monorail. :stuck_out_tongue:

But I think that was around the exact same time.

There were several models. The first one was released around 1987, the last one around 1994 AFAIR.

That’d be the one you pictured, 1994.

Ah! The pictures I found looked all similar.

Looks like the base plate from this Pirate themed set, with a different color theme

I had an older one, but with some additional tracks it was also quite nice :

Though I guess that’s also where they really started going overboard with these large parts that weren’t really all that useful in custom creations.

I think I stopped with the space Lego once they switched to the black-yellow color theme. Wasn’t really a fan of the look.

Snif, snif. I lived in Germany from September '86 till August '88. Those were the Lego sets available at that time. I would have loved to have one of those. But I didn’t receive many Lego Space sets, only a few, with smaller ships.

I had way more Knights sets. Even one of the bigger castles:

I’ve read somewhere that those monorail pieces have a big resell-price.

What does big mean in context? 50 euros?

Well, not that much, at least per piece.

You can look up prices parts were sold on BrickLink, e.g.:

Yep!

They are pretty cool but I never had one. 6991 looks particularly awesome.

Not bad, prices start at 500 EUR!

In total there were 3 mono rails:

Good catch! 6276 Eldorado Fortress from 1989 was the first one using this mold.

I’ve found 6 variations:

Crazy.

I know, normally you get such prices for rare stuff when it’s still sealed, but here we are talking about quite old and used sets.

For me it was the other way around: more space sets and only some small castle ones, like this one: 6034 Black Monarch’s Ghost (1990)

If you want a modern variant of such castle: 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle (2022)
Really a great set! Super expensive though… (400 EUR)

I’m tempted… but that price… and it takes up a lot of space (and it’s not even a space set :person_shrugging:).

I saw a couple of those new Castle sets. They look great. Even some smaller ones. But I haven’t purchased Lego for myself since, well, the early nineties. My children love Lego now. I use them a bit as a pretext :smirk:. But they are not into knights.
They are interested in a Pirates set though, and since I never had Lego Pirates, it will be easy for them to convince me and get it for christmas:

It’s really a great set! Every time I see it I want to buy it myself. It has practically Monkey Island written all over it!

And that shark is super cute.

Yes! I’ve been thinking about how to convert that giant skull on the island into a giant monkey head with the bricks we have.

That looks really great. Even the sails are made out of bricks. Unlike with the early sets:

That might have been my first large set. I think the space stuff came next and pirates were the most modern ones. Playing all those involved a lot of time travel or alternate dimension stories .

Looking back, I realize that Knights and Pirates were rather geared towards violent play. Space, at least initially, seemed more exploration focused. Don’t think any of the sets I had contained any sort of weapon, unless some of those fixtures on the ships count as laser cannons. But no blasters for the minifigs!

At least I didn’t have anything as sinister as this :

Great set, nevertheless. I had to go my friend’s house to play with that one!

My pirates were pretty peaceful, doing what we’d now call pacifist stealth runs.

But where can we see the more informative Danish/Dutch/German names?

Edit:
Here’s a start:

It’s on page 17 and it’s called 6 ridders met buit (6 knights with loot).

English seems to be beating about the bush with their knight’s procession.

Huh, in the original Danish it’s called ridderoptog — knight’s procession! I’ll be…

Edit 2: in 1982 in Dutch they were still 6 knights with loot, but now also “with helmets, shields and equipment” Netherlands Katalog Lego 1982 : Katalog Lego : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive
