I’m actually surprised Ron said Tim and Dave know about the secret. I thought he didn’t tell anyone.

GrumpyGamer: The ending of MI2 does connect to the secret, but not in the way most people assume.
Like Grim Fandango!
@ephialtes : you are a real cornucopia of secret-related juicy information.
I thought that I knew all Ron’s statements about the secret but I never read that IRC chat.
Why do I have the feeling that RTMI will contradict all those statements made by Ron during the years?
I don’t know. Pessimism?
you made me become like this
Though I have to say Ron’s recent interviews helped
Why, oh why did he not want to say whether he will reveal the secret?
Here’s Ron declaring that they have tested 1,031 different secrets but none of them did sound right. Or at least that’s my interpretation of the tweet.
I like that Ron gives some technical updates even they are not that deep. This is a luxury we did not have for earlier games.
I was thinking about that chat just yesterday, when the CNET interview with Ron Gilbert was published in which he stated: «The ending of Monkey Island 2 had a huge cliffhanger» (source). Reading it, I immediately recalled something he wrote in that chat: «It was not meant to be a cliff hanger».
I’ve always wondered if he was joking (as in the Special Edition commentary: «This is were it all comes together and is explained fully») or if he intended to say that the ending was not originally meant to be a cliffhanger but then ended up being a cliffhanger as a result of little adjustments and additions which the initial idea for the ending underwent.
At this point, our only hope is to get hold of this box:
On the other hand… this tweet is from Dec 2021. RTMI had been in development for more than one year. Ron is mentioning the secret during development of RTMI. Strong evidence he didn’t drop it! Also evidence he didn’t change it.
Wow.
do I also read “town”, “elevator”?
Isn’t the elevator simply in that one alley?
yes but that picture looks like Monkey Island. Also the elevator in the sketch has a pulley and a pulley related puzzle.
Simon the Sorcerer: Origins was just announced.
I can’t believe it.
This year, we’ll get a new Monkey Island, Colossal Cave 3D by the Williams, a new Gobliiins game, and now this?!?
All the classics are coming back.
This is crazy.
There’s also the remake of The Pandora Directive and the sequel to Flight of the Amazon Queen.
I feel like no matter what the secret is, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment with 30 years of speculation. My attitude of “there’s still a secret? Okay, whatever. I guess I’ll find out what it is when I get there” is going to really benefit me when the secret turns out to be Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A.
I’m going to pretend I didn’t see this potential spoiler, and try to muster up the will to play Grim Fandango anyway.
It’s not a spoiler. I don’t even understand the reference, and I finished the game at least five times.
