Ron declares he is working on a new Monkey Island

Classic Ron. Tease and quit!

It’s going to be hard because we have to keep the project a secret.

But why exactly do you have to? Are these the doctor’s orders? Is KGB on your tracks? Are you afraid Sierra will hunt you down and steal the source code?

I don’t know, but it’s possible that he just likes to keep secrets.

As he said:

I’m pretty good at keeping secrets. I’m so good at it people actually send me death threats. If you have a secret, you can tell me. I won’t tell anyone. Go ahead. I’m listening.

Also, after the extremely social but demanding TWP development, I imagine that working without the pressure of fans continuously asking question could have been refreshing.

Thinking about the ui. I hate the current status-quo.

Is this a hint that the interface will be different from Delores?

I’m not sure what the status-quo of adventure game user interfaces is.

I don’t expect something extremely different from Delores’ UI, though.

Seems like it was on his mind a few months before Return started up: Grumpy Gamer - Verbs and Adventure Games

Also, I think it’s interesting that in his latest blog post he mentions playing MI1-3 to prep for Return, but doesn’t mention the newer games. Not sure if this has been mentioned here yet.

The idea of playing a different character made me think that a game about LeChuck wouldn’t be bad at all.

After all, he’s a poor guy who sadly lost his life trying to impress a lady who disliked him. There is no evidence that he was a bad person before being rejected by Elaine.

After he died, his obsession for her kept him from finding (eternal) peace and all his desperation turned into a deranged revenge towards those who he deemed responsible for his ill fate.

I think that I would like to play a game where the story is told from the perspective of the rejected guy.

Reminds me of kyrandia 3,where you play as Malcolm, the bad guy. (the graphics sucked unfortunately)

I wonder if the whole of “Act 1” will be Guybrush as a kid, as it picks up where Monkey Island 2 ended.

unlikely because it wouldn’t be a “pirate story” for a good part of the game. Ron said “solid pirate story”.

Or worse, because he had to announce it on April 1st?

I wouldn’t completely exclude it. For a writer, there is always a way to achieve some goal.

Maybe little Guybrush will spend the first act roaming in the “piratey ride” of the amusement park!

By the way: the IP is Disney’s, now, so they could even make an official mention of “Pirates of the Caribbean”, if they desire so. I don’t think it will happen, but I think it’s interesting to point out that now nothing would stop the developers to do so.

The only reason I think it might be the whole of Act 1 is that each act/chapter is usually all one big location, before moving onto another location for the next act/chapter… so if they introduced kid Guybrush and had the first location be the end of MI2, then the game might stay there for a while.

Though it would be odd to have a whole act as kid Guybrush.

I think it would make sense. Act 1 will be the amusement park, as an introduction. Then Act 2 goes to a more open area, where we can pick several islands, like in MI2. That would be cool.

Maybe the whole first act will be Guybrush riding the Pirate ship for two hours:

In the new interview, Rex Crowle says:

for this adventure a picture-book style was the right fit.

This is not the first time that the association with a picture book has been made by the authors.

Speaking of that image…

The ship behind the buildings and the entrance sign pointing towards us seems to suggest they’re outside the park.

It makes sense that a gift shop and a restaurant are outside the park, but then there’s a coin operated fortune teller machine.

But most importantly… there’s Stan. Stan is supposed to be a parody of used car salesmen, why would he sell cars outside of an amusement park? What could he be possibly selling?

Considering the picture is clearly based on Booty Island, but every building serves a different purpose, I’m not so sure it is Stan’s at all. Could be anything beginning with an “S”.
I’d say, the similarities to Booty Island is the interesting part of that picture.

Do y’all see anything that resembles a picture book in Rex’s art?

Personally, I don’t see a strong resemblance with a picture book. But maybe it’s something that becomes clear only when you see it animated. Like a pop-up book.
