Cow is a holy animal!
Why? Resp. what are the origins?
The Cow is believed to have been housed by all the gods i.e. Vishnu, Saraswati,etc… and moreover Cow is one of the major source for fertilizer in India i.e. Cow Dung… and so it is believed in the Hindu scriptures that doing service to Cow is a holy thing and cleanses all your sins… and why heart a innocent being when you can get the same nutrients from plants…

I’ve got the greatest respect for people that manage to keep meat off their plates. The best I achieved was to limit meat to one meal per day, and then a day or two per week without. Quite an undertaking in Germany, with all the ham and sausages around. Luckily, there are some delicious alternatives available these days. They might even count as strange (or at least unusual) food you should give a try. Some of my favourites below. Make quite a colourful Brotzeit too:

According to wikipedia, the first recorded occurrence of “holy cow” does indeed refer to hinduism, but it was mostly a joke. It seems that the expression is just a self-censoring for “holy christ”, just as “parbleu” is for “pardieu”, and maybe it stuck for its probably unintended reference to holy cows in India.

That is of course hard to tell. But it´s funny that people doing that are doing it so because they don´t want to use “the name of the lord in vain” and just substitue someone else´s believes instead.

I don’t know if it’s restricted to Sardinia, but “Buddha’s dick!” is pretty common.
