The 2018 what are we playing thread

Yes, I would!! (but be careful, don’t hurt yourself!)

I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took the table to the knee.

Playing VR you would also need to record yourself, that’s probably where most of the fun happens!

For some reason I couldn“t work out yet how to activate the facecam for the VR mode. I could stream me playing Thimbleweed Park with a push of one button, but I“m not sure about that yet.

So far I“ve always been playing in a darkened room because then I don“t get any light from under the headset that is distracting. Obviously I“d have to switch that on too then.

And the thing with the capture footage itself is that it looks super shakey. You don“t register your own headmovements but when you see the footage on a headcam it can make you feel dizzy looking at it.

So there is still a few things to figure out, yet.

You could place your phone (or a digital camera, if you still have one of those old-fangled things) somewhere in the room to record your movements. Then capture the in-game footage how you would usually, and put the two recordings alongside each other later. With this method, we also get to see you walking into things

See that“s tons more complicated. The good thing about the PS4 is that I only need to push a button when I want to livestream to my youtubechannel (but the problem there is my connection seems not to be stable enough to not cut out too much).

Does your channel record the livestream? In that case @tasse-tee 's idea is easy to achieve: Record to your channel, then download the video, cut it and then upload the result.

In which terms not stable enough? Does the recording end or do you have (just) dropouts?

Anyway: If you need help with a setup, drop me a note. I would even cut the video for you if needed.

Actually I recorded a bit last night and thought it would be really useful if someone would cut a highlight reel or something since there were really long stretches where I just got lost and didn“t say anything at all.

Let“s see I try to work out something. And archived livestream might really be the best idea.

Drop me a note if you need help.

Yeah actually that might be the way this could work. I think the problem is that the camera is needed to capture the movement from the headset and move controllers and can“t be used as a recording camera at the same time because of that?

Next thing I would need to find a place where my phone sits tightly and also is able to get a clear view of me moving around and achieving that is also no easy task.

But the problem persists that my internet connection keeps cutting out long enough for the livestream to stop after only a minute or so at a time. And even in that time the results are rather shakey. The way my setup is now I can only have an internet connection on my console via WLAN and I think they recommend a cable because that would be more stable.

Eh, I thought it might be fun idea anyway. :man_shrugging:

You could still make some recordings for us to watch
Maybe you have a high shelf (at eye-level) somewhere that you could place the phone on, prop it against some books or something?

What is your current setup? You are playing on a PS and you have a VR headset where you have to ā€œslide inā€ your phone? Or do you have a ā€œstandalone headsetā€?

Just record yourself with a second camera. Maybe you can lent an ā€œaction camā€ or use an old smartphone. If you can use a/your own smartphone and you don’t have a tripod, put your smartphone on a stepladder or place it on a shelve as @tasse-tee suggested. Let your recording device record the video for example on a SD card. Then play the game and make sure that the video of the game is also recorded somewhere. After you finished your session we take both videos, cut and edit them and make a nice film out of them.

You know what makes wonderful phone/tablet stands?

LEGOs.

Indeed. But if you would like to place the phone upright, you have to use the bigger bricks, you have to build them around the phone and (more important) you have to make sure that the surface of the shelf isn’t slippery. In most cases it is faster just to put a big book behind the phone.

(Well, these are my experiences. )

I found out that there is two ways I can livestream via my phone. Via twitter and via youtube. Only can“t do it on the PC because I never saw a reason to buy a camera or a headset for the computer. The practical thing with the PS4 is, is that so many software and gadgets that you need for all that already came with the console where I had to buy tons of extra stuff for the PC.

I“ll be thinking of methods, I haven“t quite given up, yet.

As I said: You don’t necessary have to livestream the video. Record the video on the smartphone. We’ll cut that together afterwards.

Maybe I“ll just play as one of those guys the next time?

I“ll just tested putting the phone under the TV. That actually works perfectly fine. But how would you sync that with the footage from the TV?

Depends on the footage: If you are able to record the game sound in both videos, my video editing software is able to sync the videos. It’s sufficient if you hear the same sound in both videos for a few seconds. For example you can just turn on your speakers at a low volume (so that your smartphone records the game sound too).

If this is not possible I would sync the videos manually. This is not very difficult if your gestures (and screams) are unambiguous.

No that shouldn“t be a problem. You“d even be able to hear me talking in my room and in the game at the same time.
