I think GURPS is one that can apply to any campaign. The problem with the classic D20 obviously is the way we are limited with dice rolls.
Like D&D, or something like that? I’ve heard of things like that but know hardly anything about them, but the idea has intrigued me recently…
However it works, I think we would need a way for each of us to drop in and out of the game, so that it can continue without having to wait for a certain character to do an action. Is that possible?

Exactly. I´m suggesting this because I haven´t played in ages and as it looks now there is no way I´m gonna find a group anywhere but online, so why not here? 
I think that could be doable. Any ideas @Someone ?

Unfortunately not (at the moment). The last time I played a classical RPG was in the early 90s.
Beside the things @tasse-tee mentioned you have to make sure that the rules are not too complicated.
Sure. I also started with Fighting Fantasy single player books. And first time I played AD&D the DM eased us slowly in. Reading the rulebooks before might be overwhelming. I wouldn´t actually suggest that to first time players anyway.
Also the rules have to factor in what kind of campaign we want to play. It could even be a setting in the Thimbleweed Park universe.

That would be cool.
Yeah that would bring many advantages, like the possibility of making our own story and expaninding on the universe. Knowing the ending of the game the possibilites for creations of new characters are also virtually endless.
It also could alllow for non lethal combat where someone who lost all his HP just gets knocked out or something. Games like Earthbound have demonstrated what you can do with very mundane enemies.
