The Secret of Monkey Island: a community playthrough

Are you playing the Amiga or the PC version? I guess the latter one?

They liked it. They could solve some puzzles by themselves, and I could see the spark of pride in their eyes whenever it happened - but I stepped in with hints a couple of times because I didn’t want them to lose interest if stuck for too long.

My youngest daughter was very involved in the story and the jokes. Also, if I say some insults, they remember the reply. Which is a big win for me.

Now, let’s wait a couple of days and then it’s sequel time.

Update: I’m talking to some pirates!

It seems that everyone has his/her own distorted memory of some events occurred in the past.

Now I’ve reached a part of the game that made me feel ashamed when I was a teenager. :expressionless:

The reason is that in my first run I completely missed a character who, while being a key one for the story, is 100% optional in practice. You can finish the game without ever making the acquaintance!

If you want to know how I missed the character: I just didn’t realize that there was an additional room, at the right of this one:

I realized the existence of the character only years later.

I realized it was a woman years later. I thought it was a man.

You can disable it with a browser plugin like Stylus if you want. Just add this line of CSS:
.spoiler-blurred {filter: blur(0) !important;}
Just don’t blame me if you get spoiled anywhere on this forum.

Indeed, there are some inconsistencies even between the original close ups. Mancomb has a similar fine backdrop gradient than Spiffy. Estevan has almost no pattern, and the Loom guy has a somewhat more rough gradient.
IIrc, I used 240 colors for the Spiffy room. Most rooms use fewer colors for the room graphics, since quite a few are also reserved for the actors.

Update: she just asked me when I’m going to let her play the sequel.

Tomorrow is going to be a very rainy day, it seems the perfect chance to start it.

All good guesses but it was Campari
which I don’t have any idea what is made of, so there’s a fair chance that is made of a mix of some of the stuff you mentioned

Just arrived in town

And then when I got out of the Scumm Bar

Wow, time passes quickly when you’re having a good time with nice people.

Oh, you have raw fish!

Yeah, I discovered recently you can actually stew the fish in the boiling pot. This is deceiving. I think if I tried back then, I would have been misleaded since I would have thought that the fish was intended to be used with the pot.

I did not know what “minutes” were for a meeting until learning it on Monkey Island.

I was much older than I should have been when learning this, so I’m going to leave when I played Monkey Island for the first time out of the story.

In my case, the italian translation taught me a new word back then. “minutes” was translated as “minuta”. Which is technically correct, but that’s quite a rare word. Nobody calls it in italian, the common term is “verbale”.

Ladies and Gentlemen, here is a wonderful specimen of a Melee Sylvan Swine. They like to crouch in the woods while wearing a Roman laurel wreath.

(at least, this is what I’ve always seen in those rocks)

You were in the town in the meantime. I could tell you that, even if you hadn’t got certain items.
The beginning of night time in EGA MĂȘlĂ©e is not a matter of time passed, but simply triggered when you enter the main street where the church is located.

On the other hand, it is always ten o’clock in MĂȘlĂ©e town. Creepy.

It doesn’t matter whether you boil the fish and/or meat. All it changes is the name for the item. But if you like Guybrush burning his fingers, go for it.

Something I just thought of and it’s too late to try—as usual, I’ve gone and talked to all of my future shipmates before talking to Stan at the ship emporium. But I don’t think there was any reason I had to have visited Meathook yet. If hypothetically I hadn’t, is it possible to but the ship and be ready to leave without t recruiting Meathook? And if so, what happens?

Or maybe I’m being a dummy and there was a reason I’d have had to see him before I wind up buying the ship.

When you buy the ship, Stan says “see you and your crew - all three of them”, so I suppose you have to recruit him anyway, even if you never visited his island.

That’s correct, he doesn’t play any other role in the game, besides having to be recruited as a shipmate.

No, the game doesn’t proceed unless you recruit all of them.
