Actually I had some trouble with this lighter business as well because of a minor mismatch between my general experience and the actual verbs in the game. It took me embarrassingly long to figure it out, mainly because it made me think my solution was wrong when it wasn’t.
I mean, not that I figured there was a lighter there… that was just a nice surprise.
As an aside, and shield your eyes @tasse-tee 'cause this might be a spoiler, I noticed you can burn your wallpaper map. Seems like a pretty sure-fire (harhar) way to really mess things up later — on Mars, perhaps.
Oh, and another general hint (mildly spoilerish, but it could go unnoticed)
when you are at any airport, you can read the newstand and see changing headlines (presumably things Zak mails in). When the headlines do not change, you are not making a lot of progress (yet)
My bigger airport question is how to buy the advertised book. (Doesn’t everyone do your hint as an automatism? :P) But I just realized it’s probably just me having a verb overload issue again. Maybe I tried use and neglected give or vice versa, something like that. I’ll report back after I’ve tried it a bit better.
It’s just that turn on/off put on/off stuff kind of distracting me somehow, making me forget about the more basic verbs. As an aside, I wonder if there’s a way to remap scroll up/down to u/j in ScummVM. I suppose I could always do that system-wide while playing the game, but still…
A simple remap like that would put the UX surprisingly close to Thimbleweed Park. It’s that nice inventory scrolling action that I probably miss the most in all the older games now.
(I use the i/o/k/l item selection controls in addition to the mouse. Still ticked off by the lack of enter=mouse click and arrow keys=cursor movement.)
