Oh oh. October 30th!
Sound was on… but no sound (safari browser)
Thanks for letting me know. Strange, the game was mostly tested in Safari as I coded the game on my iPad. When you say Safari is it Mac, iOS or iPadOS? Also… a stupid question but do you have sound elsewhere?
The leg in the above GIF is the one of the Navigator’s head.
Is it possible to go to this part of the game in the EGA version? You need to do something special with that stump on Mêlée island ?
What kind of cannibal would leave such an amount of meat on a leg?!
The game was released only a couple of days before my 14th birthday
I remember when I got the game box on my way to the dentist (it was June 1991 I think). I showed them the box and said “great set of theet, eh?” They were somewhat shocked
Of course!
But like I said, it is optional to completing the game - just like talking to the Voodoo lady (some people on the forum here discovered her only recently!). Unlike the other puzzles in the games, this one relied on solving a puzzle in part 1 and if you didn’t do that… you couldn’t get there in part 4. Note that also the ending is slightly different depending on if you sunk your own ship or not. Or how the romantic involvement between Guybrush and Elaine plays out differently depending on the order in which you complete the three trials.
Anyway, back to that tree stump puzzle: you need to use the chicken with the pulley, meathook’s hook and a long piece of rope. Attach the hook to the rope and put the rope through the pulley. Throw down the hook in the opening of the tree trunk a couple of times (this is random, so you might need to try again, until Guybrush comments “It seems the hook is stuck behind some sort of lever”, then PULL the rope to switch the lever. This will open the secret passage in the hell-maze. When navigating that maze, the head will start saying how he misses walking when you pass close to an exit that leads to the secret passage, so follow those. I think you just needed to do that twice or so, and then you’ll exit near the other village - which is close to the riverdelta on the northern part of the island. Funny bit: the exit looks like the second biggest monkey’s ass I’ve ever seen.
Oh… if it wasn’t clear by now… I was just “pulling your leg”… it’s all a joke and not real - except for the bit where people here have completed the game and missed the Voodoo lady. Sorry for getting anyone’s hope up. The room screenshot is from that upcoming talk by Ron on MI and MI2 which will feature never-seen-before images that got cut (like this screen).
I played the game hundred of times and never know that! When can you grab Meathook’s hook? When you’re at his home, before touching the beast?
I think I could try to explore a little bit the game with the debug menu in ScummVM. Thanks you for the answer!
Yes, it is You need to apply specific order of verbs from that “tingle, prod, poke, pet,… and then SQUEEZE will become one of the options. Once the parrot opens its beak, reach in and retrieve Meathook’s hand and he’ll give you one of his hooks.
iOS - sound was not muted or turned down
I tried again… and it is a working fine now. No idea what happened.
Is this real? I always end up completing the three trials in the same order.
Yes, that is really real, for real!
As Elaine gets kidnapped just before you complete the third trial, she cannot chase away Fester Shinetop on the docks (with the classic “plunderbunny” dialog following that. Plus Guybrush’s sudden urge to complete his trials. Fast.)
Instead you get a kind of monologue of Guybrush who reveals his feelings for the governor- without her being around to answer them. (I think this is the non-canon version).
And the variant endings that depend on what you destroy with the catapult in part 3 is also really real for real!
I don’t know why people keep bring up Oct 15th as the release date for MI. Any time I ask why I just get pointed Wikipedia and other unreliable sources that just feed back on each other. Back then there was no such thing as a release date. Stuff got shipped to stores. When the store got it maybe they put it on the shelves. Oct 15th isn’t a THING. Even people that worked at Lucas believe this, but they can’t point to anything that isn’t a circular reference.
You know what else is non-canon? Guybrush and Elaine ever getting married.
That’s interesting. Back then, I remember I got my copy of Monkey Island for PC during spring 1991, it was a long-waited “another brilliant brand new adventure from Lucasfilm Games” after Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, Indiana Jones, Loom (to me, the “Ask me about Loom” was a nice joke since I had already played it).
I believe the date of October 15th is a “popular date” when most of the game pirates stores had the game available.
That’s why we don’t mind celebrating the game’s 30th anniversary for a whole period (starting with the master disks in September until Christmas when a lot of kids may have gotten the game). Just like the Delores game, we’ll basically take anything that takes our mind off reality and the cynic world we live in for a bit. The good thing is that even such a false fixed date triggers a few extra articles or “making-of” videos…
in which you revealed that originally the governor of Mêlée was to be gov. Phatt, so yeah I can see Guybrush not ending up married to the governor. (At least not in the 17th century).
For me, I got the game together with MI2 on CD somewhere in the mid-90s (no idea which month, let alone which day) - but before Curse of Monkey Island was released. So it’s the game’s 20th-something anniversary for me.
Well, given it was October, we minimize possible errors by choosing the middle date in the month
Plus, again, it’s my daughter’s birthday, so Oct15 it is.
Because people would like to have a specific date. It’s a psychological “problem”.
(And similar to Christmas: No one knows the exact birth date of Jesus. So the church set the 24th of December to be able to celebrate the birthday.)
And don’t forget …
So it has be that date!
I don’t celebrate games, I play them.
