I Added AI Voice Acting to Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure

It’s already real:

One “goal” is that actors are selling/licensing (only) their voices to the AI services. So if you use that service in your game, the actors would be paid for it. But of course, it would be still a computer generated voice.

(btw: There was an interesting article about that topic in the German magazine c’t - unfortunately only in German:
Stimmen mit KI kopieren | c't | heise magazine)

Limiting the exploitation to just one or more titles definitely makes sense.
But I fear that some day actors will no longer be needed (for voiceover at first, in person, after) because voices will be fully synthetic.

I also wonder how the role of environmental or phone wiretapping will change in future, when it’ll be possible to fake any kind of evidence.

I can’t understand why any forum thread or video comment regarding neural network AI always has to devolve into discussion about the ethics of neural networks and how threatening they are. I find it immensely interesting work and can only imagine how annoying it must have been back in the 70’s when someone displayed a moving graphic on a computer monitor and people would have only talked about how computers were going to take over the world with their evil magic.

Sure, deepfake porn is unethical and it could be a concern eventually for politicals or any other highly important work that involves image and public opinion, but seriously, laryngitis-mode speech synthesis is still amazing work and is a facinating glimpse into future technology; the last thing I would have considered would be how someone’s rights or pay were being affected, otherwise they would have happily banned the DX7 back in 1981 when orchestra musicians thought they’d be put permanently out of work.

Really?! Can’t you?! Strange.

Oh, so you CAN, after all.

Yes, and nobody denied that.
So, please, tell me again what’s the point.

Seems like that’s exactly why people bring it up.

When AI is so good it can create TWP2 or MI games I’d be happy so see Ron & co get out of business but until then I’d be just as happy paying them to do it.

Otherwise, amazing work. It’s nice too see technology like this in early stages. I remember seeing morphing of faces, like two faces melded into one, back in the nineties on a friend’s Amiga and was blown away. Then 20 years later it really got a lot more better/serious/horrifying than that, with the deep fakes etc. of course the AI acting will get a lot better, as some of your fear, just give it a few years. Maybe the Adventure Game Maker tools can offer it as feature; have the characters in your game speak using the voice of your favorite singer/actor/classmate/uncle/brother

Hmmm, now that I think of it, they even made an adventure game about artificial intelligence and how threatening it could be. It’s called Thimble-something… You should give it a try :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yeah, you’re right, sorry, I guess it just seems a little predictable, but nevertheless legitimate concerns.

Yeah, I understand the concerns, sorry for being rude. I just think it’s an incredible development, if not quite matured yet, it fascinates me how it’s gotten Elise’s nuances so perfect, we really will be holding conversations with Mr. Data soon enough (certainly by the time we reach the century TNG was set in).

Hehe, I never considered Thimbleweed Park was actually a cathartic vehicle for Ron to get out his fear of AI taking over the world

No need to apologize, you weren’t rude.

Anyway, you don’t need to be a politician or a famous person to be afraid of the effects of such a technology. Everyone, even the most humble person among us has their enemies. And if they had the capability, they could deepfake you saying/doing anything. Just imagine your wife, friends, collegues receiving a file which depicts you saying/doing something you disapprove. It could be more than embarrassing.
