People, come back!

Yeah, but IMHO Twitter is more complicated to use: You don’t have a discussion at a single place and you have to click more. So for me it’s a little bit sad that most people are gone.

Yeah, Twitter’s kind of a usability disaster.

Twitter is fine for… tweeting. Shouting things in public and expecting almost nothing in return. Discussing there is a nightmare, and I’ll always prefer forums. But all the forums I used to visit are slowly dying, people are moving to social platforms… or whatsapp groups, which is even worse

I don’t understand Whatsapp. It’s similar to something like IRC/Discord/etc… except it only runs on some phones.

Also I’ve had the same Skype name since 2004 or so. My phone number has changed at least three times since then. I’m not really sure how Whatsapp deals with that, but either way I just don’t really see the point of arguably better texts.

It’s a slightly more beautiful variant of SMS.

And that’s a big improvement for the vast majority of people who used SMSs as the top-notch state of the art messaging system.

:musical_note: Facebook killed forumer stars :notes:

Anyway… I noticed that this platform (Discourse) and its developers are inspired by Twitter. Are they maybe trying to testore trust in humankind by creating the civilized version of that social network?

Shouldn’t @discobot take over the world?

Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help.

Come on then, discobot! It’s you or the Coronavirus!

The thing I cannot bear in whatsapp is that you can only use it on a smartphone, while it’s many years that similar programs like telegram are safe and usable with versions for many devices and operating systems. You also cannot modify or erase your messages, which is awful.

I must admit sometimes I miss some of the forumers, and I occasionally have a look on twitter, but when I’m there to sign up I’m overwhelmed by the vastity of that network.

I’m trying as hard as I can to get my family on telegram. I tried for years, because I had no data plan and no wifi at work so I was just blind for 8 hours a day while I could chat with anyone on telegram. But people get used soon and so I have to keep both telegram and whatsapp.

The good thing is that whatsapp now allows group video calls which are cool when I have to call my family. And it works better than skype on phone.

I just have a look on twitter here and there out of curiosity, for pixel art, or retro gaming reasons and to see what some people do that used to be here or are still here.

While I write not much over here, it´s atm still the most I write anywhere. So that means I´m very active here, right ^^

But I still check the forum at least once a day with sometimes having a two or three day break.

I actually have a few family members that use Signal; and I got a few to use KakaoTalk, which has a desktop version as well. As for the rest: if they don’t want to install another app to stay in touch, why should i?

As for Twitter, I use it in a read-only fashion, on my desktop only. And only grudgingly, because newsletters and forums and full fledged websites with regular updates are mostly out of fashion. And given what a mess Twitter is, I hardly subscribe to more than 4 or 5 entities at once, and it’s almost always gaming-related stuff. (There were some sponsored tweets for a while in addition, but luckily those senders could be blocked just fine)

I thought you were kidding… like paper telegram.

I for one don’t care which means of communication I use. Meaning I’ll happily adapt to use another one if I know I can reach someone easier that way.

For one-on-one communication with people I know outside the internet, SMS or calling is still very useful.
Some others might be quicker to respond to whatsapp or email, so then I use those.

When I want to communicate to a group of strangers, I might post something on Facebook or Twitter. But 99.99% of the time, it is just reading when I am bored. Not a lot of the time… Plus both of them suffer from being too large, flooding me with way too many things to keep up with. So I go in in skimming mode already.

When I want to discuss with some wonderfully passionate people, I come here. It is also the only place I will read up on topics from 3 years ago. That some of the big posters went into occasional lurking mode is a even blessing for catching up with those old threads. (That reminds me I still need to finish reading all the TWP development blog comments).

I also like reading and occasionally posting on the scummVM forums and it is nice to see some of the users here too. But still discussions there are to the point, technical and sterile.
These TWP forums are really quite unique, regardless the current number of actively posting users.

I have to admit, that I hate phone calls(*). And I really don’t know why. Is there somebody out there who feels the same?

(*) with some very few exceptions

Same here.

Depends on who’s calling, what time it is, what they’re calling about, what I’m doing at the time…

One time someone sent me an e-mail only to call me half an hour later that I hadn’t responded. (I hadn’t even seen it yet.) Which strikes me as pretty odd. If you need to know within half an hour, just call. Why waste time on an e-mail at all?

You mean getting calls or making calls? I try to keep my mobile number under tabs, so only people I’m fine receiving calls from do actually have it. If I see a number that’s not in my address book I will not pick up. I’ll google it and more often than not it’s spam.

Whether I’m calling or messaging depends: I’ll message when it’s not important or a call might be too obtrusive (i.e. early or late in the day, or when I know people are at work). But I do prefer ringing people up as I feel it’s faster and less prone to misunderstandings. I also will call when the occasion calls for it, i.e. for birthdays. Sending just a message seems way too impersonal and bordering on the impolite.

Exactly!

Both. Maybe it is because I can’t see the people - but I don’t like video calls (for example via Skype) too. I don’t have a problem with meeting people in real life.

I can’t because my customers are expecting this. :frowning: But I turn my phone off, especially at the end of work.

I’d rather have two phones than giving my private number to random people. One more reason why I dislike Whatsapp and consorts, as the account is tied to your phone number.

In a way, a mobile phone is one of the most personal items in my possession, and I’m loath to expose it to anyone and anything not dear to me. I guess I’d be better off with a phone that’s not “smart”, or at least a device like the Librem 5, but a few things (like my bank) necessitate a iOS or Android device. That was the death knell for my trusty Blackberry Z10 :frowning:.

I definitely prefer in person, but besides the interrupting part I have no trouble with them.

I second that two phone thing.
