AI-Guybrush insisted that Hernando was a lady and I used that claim as evidence that Guybrush was making up the entire story.
I don’t know what to suggest you to improve the chance that the style will not ruin your experience. Maybe you could try playing before the release some adventure game even more abstract and off-putting for you, so that RtMI style wouldn’t be so unbearable?
The pose is strange also because that’s just a frame of the official trailer and the cook is running in a desperate pose.
I had trouble identifying that object as well, I had issues with the perspective and the light around it. I wasn’t sure how big it was.
I mistook it for a cake, then people pointed me out that it was a clothed table on the floor.
@St_Eddie : Ron eventually confirmed that it was a table:
Cake on fire or a clothed table? I see an opportunity for a meta puzzle in there. BTW last time I had so much trouble identifying objects on the screen was probably when I played early Sierra games.
In theory, it’s possible that the object was drawn in that way intentionally. It’s definitely something that doesn’t match well with the rest of the scene.
Maybe it’s Guybrush remembering his past and that object is related to a foggy dream-like recollection of events.
By the way, both the trailer and the recent video clip of LeChuck show scenes where Guybrush doesn’t appear.
I don’t think that this is a coincidence nor that these scenes are cutscenes, I think that part of the gameplay is actually based on recollecting memories.
I guess we should be grateful that Return to Monkey Island isn’t a parser based game.
/>LOOK AT CAKE
Sorry, I don’t know what a “CAKE” is.
/>LOOK AT WHITE THING.
Sorry, I don’t know what a “WHITE THING” is.
/>LOOK AT WHATEVER THAT THING IS SUPPOSED TO BE.

Or… it’s just that the game is a bit of a visual mess. I know where my money would be, were I a betting man.
Yes, but since I’m an optimist I prefer to continuously instill doubt into my mind that the art style issues are not big to the point of making objects unrecognizable.
With the LeChuck clip, my money says Guybrush is here somewhere. I wouldn’t be surprised if the camera pans down to show Guybrush from his position in the trailer.
Oh right, I didn’t think about that possibility and I tend to forget that the game will probably use camera movements not seen in the previous 2D games! It’s definitely quite likely that Guybrush is eavesdropping.
For some reason, I’m not particularly interested in doing that. It would be nice, but it’s definitely something that wouldn’t improve my experience considerably.
I liked playing Sofia in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis; switching characters and using their own skills was a clever mechanic. For me it was also the first time an adventure game let me control more than one character. One of my favorite games, Gemini Rue, also has two playable characters.
But I’m not sure whether I desire that kind of mechanic used in RtMI as well.

I feel the same way. I would much rather the game sticks to the established tradition of having Guybrush as the sole playable character. I feel that we ought to be experiencing the world entirely through his eyes and perspective. That’s just what a Monkey Island game is to me.
I adore games with a character switching mechanic, such as Fate of Atlantis or Day of the Tentacle but when it comes to the Monkey Island series, I don’t particularly care for the idea of diluting the experience of the narrative being told exclusively from Guybrush’s perspective by having Elaine be a playable character. It would just feel weird to switch back and forth between Guybrush and Elaine after 5 previous games where Guybrush was the only playable character.
Now, if Ron Gilbert wanted to make a spin-off game where the narrative is told from Elaine’s perspective, then I would be totally down for that. I’d just rather keep the mainline series Guybrush focused.
If I remember correctly you have to play Elaine in one of the games. (Escape? Or Tales?). But I might be wrong with that - it’s too long ago that I played them.
I think that you’re misremembering and that you couldn’t play as Elaine in any of the games. Certainly not in Escape and I don’t believe in Tales either.
