I don’t remember right now… Ill try to find the quote. It was recent
I don’t really mind that, as long as it directly addresses what happened in MI2 and it comes from Ron, that’s good enough I think.
I remember Ron saying something like… I’m paraphrasing, sorry… The theme would be the same no matter what. Basically, it’s the way he will express this theme that would be different.
So, the plot would not be the same he imagined in 1992, but it would still talk about the same things.
I also read a thread, on this forum actually, where he said that he never knows the ending of his games in advance. He thinks first about the main plot points and the theme.
So here is what I think… He had an overall idea for MI3 in 1992. Then, the idea evolved in 2013 and maybe even in 2020, when he started working on Return, but the theme always stayed the same.
So I’m confident the game will talk about what he wanted to express for 30 years – the only thing that will change is the plot he had in mind, how he was planning to express the theme.
In a way, the game, at his heart, would be the same, IMO.
And, if that’s really the case, that’s great.
1992’s MI3 is, for me, less of a lost game that a work in progress, a draft of what Return is now.
And this is a normal process with games, even with art. A lot of things change between an idea and a final product.
I hope what I’m saying makes sense. Again, I’m not a native speaker. I feel like I made a billion mistakes. Sorry.
I’m really ready for anything. Actually, I’m intentionally figuring the worst possible story/secret so that reality will be undoubtedly better.
For example: “Ron had no clue for thirty years and, pressed by Disney deadlines, decided that the secret was that all the Monkey Island universe was a computer simulation.”
I’m OK with this.
“The Secret of Monkey Island was the friends we made along the way”
“I found the secret of Monkey Island and all I got was this stupid copyright-infringing T-shirt!”
The (new) secret will be if the ending of RMI is the same he had in mind for MI3(a) in ‘92.
And that he will never reveal!
Probably like a small boy. A little chubby.
Official disclaimer: I am not too interested in the ending of RMI… only excited about the 50 hours of gameplay that will precede it.
“OK, guys, let’s cut the ending! This way we can release a month sooner”
“That’s the second biggest cut-scene I have ever seen!”
I haven’t reached your level of spiritual enlightenment yet. I’m ready to accept “Herman Toothrot is a reptilian”, but not that.
Yeah. I’d be disappointed if it doesn’t turn out to be an above average point & click adventure. But I don’t have any expectations for the story or ending. Never had.
As long as it has lots of mazes to stretch out the gameplay!
I guess, that’s why they brought David on board
RMI: Can you help find Guybrush the way back to MI through this 50 hour long maze?
Come to think of it…. Was it officially mentioned anywhere this would be a point ‘n’ click adventure? And not a procedurally generated dungeon crawler reskinned to the MI universe?
After all, last thing we knew, Ron was working on an RPG.
(Hello Yoda and Indy’s Desktop adventures!)
I would actually like that… but again, I love meta endings.
I would even be up for another crazy ending, like MI2’s ending, something we barely understand.
I know Ron is a big fan of Twin Peaks and he loved S3 which is… something else. I’m also into Lynchian stuff, so I won’t mind Ron doing something insane. Like the ending of MI2, a lot of people would hate it, but it would be something unique.
I reckon Herman Toothrot is actually Guybrush as an old man, who has been trapped on Monkey Island through LeChuck’s spell, etc.
That would be amazing
Pun aside, I actually do like mazes, virtual or otherwise.

Apologies for my post. Lost a friend unexpectedly, got drunk, posted on the Internet. Poor form, very sorry.
Sorry for your loss.
I appreciated your post. Not my style, not nice, but definitely it said what had to be said.
It could have started a flame, but it actually extinguished it.
Anyway, you did right deleting it, after it did its job.
You are right, nobody specified what kind of game it will be.
Considering that it was developed in just two years, it might well be a Candy Crush Saga clone.
I actually laughed out loud.
