I like the art, it reminds me a little of Day of the Tentacle, in the way things are at interesting angles in a cartoony way.
Though I seem to remember Ron saying he didn’t like the DotT art, not sure if I’m remembering that correctly…
Woohoo! The PR campaign has started! Woohoo!
My thoughts exactly, even though Melee Island has had such angles in MI 1 already.
I think, it looks guite good!
It looks like the Vampire Story without Bill Tyler touches
So it was right, it’s all build on the Delores Engine
Well… it’s very deformed. Very “Lego”. It will be hard to get immersed in a world like that But it’s not worse than DOTT.
If this style has been chosen because it enables tons of animations (via Spine), it might still be worth it. It might look much better once in motion.
The upside is that my expectations have plunged, so I’ll probably end up enjoying it Let’s read the interview now…
It’s two interviews and they are long. But worth it.
PS:I looked at the screenshots again and again. And I realy like them.
These 2 quotes below from Verge hit me hard. This is what Monkey Island is about!!!
“And revisiting the world, revisiting Monkey Island — I haven’t done that in a long, long time. I remember when I first started this project, and I was writing code, and I first typed the words “Guybrush.” It sent a chill down me because I had not typed those words into code in 35 years. That was really fun to just kind of relook at the world again.”
“And then I told him that it was the new Monkey Island , and he was just floored. Which is a reaction I get from a lot of people. Before, when we were bringing people on, and we’d talk to them, the minute I mentioned, “I’m making a new Monkey Island ….” One person literally started crying. They were so happy that this was happening.”
That sprang to my mind as well, and the much more recent Cris Tales. Not quite sure what to make of it yet, but as has been said in one of the interviews, it’s yet another thing when seen in motion. I guess I could like it.
I definitely liked the animation in the trailer, it looked like they putting a lot of effort into it, with Murray’s little expressions, etc.
In the game there will not only be animations but also the characteristic soundtrack and the text screen at the beginning of every chapter. And of course characters such as Guybrush, the voodoo master, LeChuck, Elaine and so on.
We might get immersed quickly.
It looks retro to me, just not 90’s retro. More like 00’s retro. All those flash games looked like that.
As I’m certain the design of this game will be top quality, the art only needs to be good enough to not “break the spell”.
After reading the interview, it seems animation is central in this game. In motion, it will be much better.
So… expectations back up .
I’m OK with the graphic style.
From the teaser video I already realized that the game didn’t have a dirty piratesque style like MI2. So I’m prepared and cool.
I’m not saying that I find dirty pirates and polished geometric shapes very compatible, I’m just saying that I don’t think it will ruin my game experience.
Unfortunately for me, how I like the graphic style plays usually a big role in enjoying the game. I didn’t care much about Broken Age just because its art style was off-putting, for me. I didn’t back the TWP Kickstarter solely because I didn’t like the Winnick art in the trailer.
Despite this, I don’t think that it will be the same for Return to Monkey Island. I’m sure I will enjoy the game nonetheless.
With a magnet of course!
A magnet… with a pulley in the middle
I like this quote from Emily’s article:
So can you tell us how Return to Monkey Island came to be, and how your thinking has changed around that?
Ron: Well, I bought Disney, that’s how this all happened.
Curtains!
And my personal favourite sentence is this one:
And David Fox is working on Return to Monkey Island too, right?
Ron: Yeah, he is. He’s the lead game programmer.
I just read the Adventure Gamers interview.
It’s a pity that LeChuck’s voice actor was retired (and apparently not interested enough to do it still). Hopefully they’ve found someone else who is as suitable.
Fortunately Dominic Armato is aboard again.
I wonder if they integrated iMuse, seeing that its creators are involved. But it doesn’t seem so to me.
Let’s keep in mind that “the grumpy” characters are those written by Ron.
