Ron declares he is working on a new Monkey Island

Here you go. It’s the trailer of the new art style:

Hooray! Disappointment averted!

There are videos of people watching the showcase and their disappointed faces at the end of the event are painful. :expressionless:

I imagine the painful call that must have taken place between Devolver’s CEO and Ron Gilbert.
“Please Ron, we have to show something of RtMI…”

“No. Nobody must ever see anything of the game, ever. The secret will lay with me in my grave”

Let’s also add an evil laugh.

So, there was nothing new in the video?

There was no video, period. They didn’t even so much as mention Return to Monkey Island during the livestream.

I’m not sure if that’s the case, judging by Grumpy Gamer - Linux

My goal is to see how far I can get developing my new game on directly on Linux and not the Mac (I haven’t developed on Windows in years). Can I ditch the Mac and go 100% Linux?

And also Grumpy Gamer - Apple?

I have largely given up on Apple.

Some of us were talking about speedrunning Monkey Island, so this new Ron’s tweet seems appropriate:

Why do you need two difficulty levels if there’s a hint system embedded in the game?

For TWP, the hint system wasn’t initially present, so the presence of easy mode made sense. But for RTMI?

I imagine the easy mode adds a lot to game-testing costs.

I assume that the easier mode has less puzzles, so it creates also a shorter game, which some players might prefer.

I can’t picture those players

Since one of the goals of the project is to make the game appealing to those who don’t play adventure games (anymore or at all), I expect the game to provide features needed for a more “casual” audience:

  • Catch-me-all feature for those who don’t know/remember the other games
  • Easy mode
  • Hint system
  • Auto-play mode
  • CTRL-W command

By the way, regadless of all these efforts, I still think that most reviews will define the game “A heartfelt homage to the old-school adventure games niche”

Autoplay mode is interesting. OTOH it’s not very different than let’s plays.

Can anyone explain why on earth this has appeared on Devolver’s game page???

:astonished:

When I go to it, I only see the Windows symbol

I’m a little surprised that more discussion hasn’t occurred among the fandom regarding that court house screenshot. Why is it icy on an island in the Caribbean? My pet theory is that a voodoo curse has resulted in the Caribbean becoming cold and snowy. I might also postulate that Guybrush is on trial, standing accused of unleashing said chilly curse.

Maybe something you do in the amusement park makes a particular island turn icy?

I can.

There are a lot of casual gamer and adventure game fans without much spare time. This is even valid for “old” adventure game fans: Most of us have a family and not much time. But we would like to enjoy a good story and a good game.

Disclaimer: I will play the game in the normal mode.

Probably those players are not very interested in puzzles but mostly in the story. Otherwise, even if they don’t have much spare time, they wouldn’t choose easy mode. They would simply play for just 10 minutes a day in normal mode.

What I’m trying to say is that lack of time alone doesn’t explain it.
