Nope… the new UI would take up too much screen. I won’t even show it to you (unless you want to laugh). Basically it looks like scumm, but the verbs are very long (they are sentences with “holes”).
Idea for a hint system…
(one which is integrated in the world.)
You have a magical sphere that the witch gives you.
You can consult this sphere every 20 minutes, then it needs time to recharge .
This sphere shows you pictures (more or less enigmatic ones) that tell you which objective (= puzzle) you can solve right now. (but does not tell you how, and does not tell you in which location you need to act).
If there is more than one objective solvable at this time (as there usually is), the sphere picks one at random.
If the objective also has a clue in a dialog, then, the second time you use the sphere, it also tells you there is a dialog to read again, and the dialog will be automatically replayed. (this spares you the need to find the correct one in the dialog history).
this is something. I’m not yet sure if this covers all the kind of hints that I want to give.
It is unclear if the sphere should consider an objective “solvable right now” in case you haven’t picked up the needed object. But I think it should consider it “solvable”.
Edit: better yet: you can’t pick up the sphere - you need to go to the witch to use it.
20 minutes sounds a bit annoying tbh, like a free to play game. Incidentally, did you look at the TWP hint system? Also see what I just wrote over at Let's talk about the dreaded "Monkey Wrench" puzzle - #124 by Frenzie
If by even better you mean you have to go to the witch as opposed to you have to wait 20 (!) minutes, I’d agree.
I think the 20 minutes time is necessary.
in TWP it’s not needed because there is no teleport to the hint line. You need to spend time walking. In my game you can teleport to the witch via the map in 5 seconds.
I need to prevent this kind of behavior: 1) use the sphere before picking up something , or before entering a new location: it tells you there’s no puzzle you can solve right now ; 2) do that “something” (enter new location, or pick up the object) 3) get back to the sphere, and it tells you “now you can solve this puzzle”. But then it is too easy because suddenly you know that the object you just picked (or the dialog you just listened to) is the solution to the puzzle.
I think you might be looking for Pokémon time rather than real time. I remember when I first went to the zoo (wildlife preserve?) in Pokémon, I was told I had five (?) minutes in the zoo to collect special Pokémon. So I rushed through, hoping to get as much action in as I could, and I was flummoxed that about half a minute later they already kicked me out of the zoo.
I then realized there wasn’t an actual time limit, just a step limit of a 100 or whatever. And each step progressed what was presented as a countdown timer.
(edit: good idea)
Edit… No, wait, I know what you mean now. Good solution!
Good enough…
(it was too hard to draw a house “torn apart”, as in the script, so this will have to do )
When I wrote the script, I didn’t realize how hard it would be to illustrate some of the scenes…
It’s as real as I expected!
I was in doubt whether to draw the mom with “the arm”
She is in the relaxed position, that’s fine as is.
This scene required an illustration I think
Mike Stallone accepts to chop the wood. Stares at it, then says:
"See? That’s how it’s done! " (and leaves)
PS: is the word “mythomaniac” common in English? or is it better to say “he’s just a random psychopath”, as I did?
I doubt it. There’s another word though that means something like compulsive liar, I can’t quite think of it right now.
yeah. I figured as much. Psychopath will do
In other news… I realized what my problem with music is. Basically when there’s music I can’t understand what I am reading. I think it’s common enough. Can you study with music in the background? Some people absolutely can’t.
(If the game has speech, it’s the same. Over the music , I can’t focus on (or understand) what is being said)
Delusional?
That would make sense as a translation actually…
Nah, I probably just mean “compulsive liar” itself. It’s not like there’s a specific reason to prefer one single word.
