Americans call them (French) fries.
While in actuality, they’re (Belgian) fries. 
That’s because historically, Americans usually suck at European geography…
same reason they call it “french kissing” 
Unless you’re referring to the very thin allumettes style of fries/chips they serve at McDonalds and alike. Those are French (and not really “fries”/“chips”/“frieten”)
