The 2020 what are we playing thread

Did I mention Desperados III? I was too busy playing it to post screenshots. :stuck_out_tongue:

I´d say about a third. About 8 1/2 for the download and about 25 hours to finish the main story (My safe says 30 but I did a lot of side stuff too in that time). The real meat as in any open world game is in all the sidequests and random encounters. I´m way from finished. I also just saw one of the about 8 or so endings.

Phew, I´d never dare say such definite things with the little 2020 games I´ve played. For that to be the judge you´d have to know a lot of other things that have come out this year. Sure it was the one that was the most anticipated and I was looking forward to it and I enjoy playing it. But the pre-release hype about it was just unhealthy. No wonder the backlash is as bad as it is. I probably would have enjoyed it more on a really good PC (not sure if mine would be enough and at full price I wouldn´t want to dare risk it) while on console it was barely playable but not as bad to really kill my enjoynment of it entirely. I´m sure it´ll get better in the future too. As a game it´s good. As a release in the shape it came out…eh…

Oh yeah, I still have only played like 3 new titles this year which still isn´t a whole lot.

But actually I think I enjoyed Ghost Of Tsushima more on a whole.

If you don’t show it, please do tell about the combat. From what little I read, the story-telling aspects seem as good as it gets, but how does the combat play? Mind you, I’m the guy who looked at Doom, thought it was awful and basically never touched a FPS since (I was quite fascinated by No One Lives Forever, but I never got past the first mission :frowning:).

With CP77, I’d envision more of a Katana-swinging career, but I fear it might be a short one :slightly_smiling_face:.

I definitely will not attempt to give it a try before upgrading mine. And likely I’ll just wait for the DLCs and all the patches, too. Same as with TW3. At least Cyberpunk is already confirmed to run in Wine (with some caveats), whereas when I bought TW3 it would barely launch. To actually be playable it required compiling custom Wine versions for the most part, and the graphical glitches initially were much worse than Cyberpunk on the PS4 :slight_smile:.

So yeah, no need to hurry …

I can totally reassure you in that aspect. You go many many hours in the game without shooting at all. And in almost all cases you can stealth (hack cameras so you won´t be spotted etc) instead. Also you can absolutetly go for the only Katana swinging round! It´s actually what I´ve been thinking about doing myself, since I find that way easier to do to just charge at somebody directly intead of trying to aim with this barely existing cover system they have. So if the more you use your blades the more you can upgrade them and add perks so you can end up the most effective Katana wielding Samurai there is!

But from what I´ve seen so far there are lots and lots and lots of quests that don´t require you to shoot anything at all. I went many hours in this game without shooting anything. Outside of a few mandatory boss fights and a few “take them all down” situations you aren´t forced to combat at all. Which is not to say it happens rarely. But if you choose to you barely use your weapson at all. And there are many other alternatives to shooting as well (like frying somebody´s brain if you get the right hack).

Just in the finale I got I used the sniper rifle because other than almost any other weapon it turned out to be a one shot kill type of thing so that turned out easier than I thought (and was really helpful for the final boss as well).

So yeah, this game is definitely not an FPS at all. I´ve been thinking about that myself had I expected one I´d be gravely disappointed.

However the roleplaying aspects aren´t the biggest either. So it all depends what kind of expectations has in that regard. But I can get to that in another post…

Guess it’s on par with TW3 then. All the trailers were full of combat, the actual game not so much. Quite reassuring, thanks :slight_smile:!

As for the role-playing, I doubt it will disappoint. In a game like this it’s more about the decisions you can make and less about how painstakingly a particular pen & paper system has been adapted. At least for me.

I´m sure you´ll like it when you liked Witcher 3. I can´t speak for that since I didn´t play that. I can compare it to Skyrim which I thought had way more decisions (even though the most important seeming decision there actually turned out to be hilariously meaningless) and interactivity than this one has.

There are so many empty chairs I´d love to be able to sit on and just take in the scenery, so many food vendors I can´t even talk to and the actual role playing is almost non existant since you play a mercenary and that´s it. You get three lifepaths but they only influence the first quest you have and some not very impactful dialogue choices, but actually if you play anybody but The Streetkid (ie the Corporate or the Nomad) you´ll find out you eventually still end up as the street kid.

You can specialise with your skills a bit though and there are a few decisions that really mean something especially if you want to get one of the 8+ different endings. And they still seem to do their best so you won´t miss anything.

It´s a really good futuristic action adventure game though and I like that there are tons of different ways you can solve a situation. You can even challenge yourself to shoot as few bullets as possible. So yeah, I guess game trailers aim for more speed and action than actually happens these days, which is good because you´d need even better hardware than you do anyway to handle all that speed and action if that were the case! :sweat_smile:

Shame about the food vendors! And I guess being able to sit down would be nice too, occasionally.

But I personally don’t mind playing a specific character, if that benefits the narrative. RPGs like Kingdom Come: Deliverance or Disco Elysium also have that, as do the Witcher games, obviously. And even classics like Planescape: Torment or Ultima VII.

And even with Skyrim, which character you create doesn’t really affect the game as such. It’s really more which parts of the content you chose to complete with a given character that gives them their distinct personality. I don’t expect Cyberpunk to offer the same breadth of content present in an Elder Scrolls game, but perhaps a bit more depth to the content that is available :slight_smile:.

Yeah each race has their distinct special features but it´s not like the Nords bombard you with racial slurs because you play as a Dunmer.

I´m pretty sure you´ll like it then. If you wait long enough for the most important fixes and play it on the best PC you can imagine, it´s a really great looking game and the cinematic parts are fantastic. It is also really well done from a narrative point, if you like good storytelling in your games you are also right at home here.

I´m a sucker for sidequests I know often those are the ones were the real great stories are so maybe the one that blows me off my socks I´ve still yet to see.

No, I haven´t seen that one so far (I´m also playing in english) !

That´s funny because I noticed the missions have cool title but so far they´re all named after songs, mainly Punk Rock and Heavy Metal but also others (and probably a lot modern stuff I don´t recognise). I know that War Pigs for instance is among them, but I haven´t seen that one yet either.

There is a whole strand of street brawling missions that are headline “Beat On The Brat” and now I have that stuck in my ears! :sweat_smile:

It´s interesting that every sort of game calls them different. In this case it´s “job”. Also for the main storyline. So you have main jobs and side jobs. I guess they thought using the word “quest” would fit more in a fantasy setting (and I´m assuming that´s what they called in in The Witcher).

Will do! It´s not missable in any case. As soon as I unlocked it it´ll stay there either as unfished or finished. Not gonna disappear.

The list of books they quoted from in the ending credits is pretty impressive as well. Will post screenshots of that later, too.

I overlooked it at first since that title is exclusive to the german version, in the english version it´s called “Many Ways To Skin A Cat”

The obvious translation of many ways to skin a cat is that many ways lead to Rome, but in context that seems kinda meh. This translation’s definitely a good find… arguably a bit obscure, but we are talking about a video game here.

With this being a polish studio with a very international dev team you can´t actually really tell what the original language is in this case (i.e. what speaker came up with it and who did the localisation into other languages). The head quest designer (Miles Tost) for instance is german. So maybe there is a slight chance the german title was the original in this case. :slightly_smiling_face:
