The 2020 what are we playing thread

They pretty much said in an interview about TW3 that there isn’t really an original language from which the other versions are derived:

I assume it was the same for Cyberpunk.

While I usually do not play games made outside Germany in German (because more often than not, the translation will be pretty shoddy), I liked the German localization of TW3 better than the English one. Mostly because I had read the books in German and felt more at home with the German names (Rittersporn instead of Dandelion or Plötze instead of Roach, etc.), but I actually liked the German voice of Geralt much better, too.

Haven, which I finally did get working (strace be praised!). Quite atmospheric so far, both from a graphical perspective (the color palette, mainly) and for the chemistry between the protagonists. Although their conversations don’t feel as natural as in, say, Firewatch or Heaven’s Vault. Perhaps it’s all just a bit too stereotypical.

The good ending to Cyberpunk 2077 feels really familar somehow!

Possibly just one of those cinematographic conventions Noah Falstein mentioned during that interview? Unless you tell me the girl is called Elaine .

Also note that the MI screenshot is all wrong (yikes!):

Oh yeah. Most likely in the way that the Zak McKracken cover art is a parody of the standard “King Of The Mountain” motive.

Oh yeah, I noticed that. Some of those I found via google search were even worse!

Most of your examples are parodies/pastiche themselves? :stuck_out_tongue:

Considering what happened to Chevy Chase and especially Randy Quaid I contend that Vacation is a dark prophecy of things to come!

But true, those aren´t the best examples, the article I took this from is very good though, I mostly chose that over others because it actually acknowledged Zak being a part of that trope, as opposed to almost everywhere else.

However the article links to possibly the most famous examples that are most likely the direct references for Steve Purcell´s Zak cover.

Mhhhh…

Look especially at the sabre!

Nice saber, but what’s that weird spidering round-faced creature in the bottom left?

I haven´t read John Carter yet (but I´m about to), but I´m sure those four armed aliens are the Martians in that universe.

The latter is the cover of my edition and also close to what they look like in the 2012 movie version.

The woman in this picture has cellulite? :flushed:

Hmmm, maybe that´s a surface styling descision because and that case it looks like the man has something too

So? It surely is more realistic than the warrior guy wearing only a helmet to be protected from enemy swords/arrows/spears/rocks/… :joy:

But did you know that guy who painted that also did the cover picture for Golden Axe?

I can’t help but notice he’s got a tiny sword. Makes you wonder why the other guys have such a large one.

Because the game is called “Golden Axe” and not “Tiny Sword”.

Given where we are, perhaps we should also include these:

Good examples!

I believe since Duke Nukem was partially inspired by Ash (and Snake Plissken and Roddy Piper among others) this might even have been a direct inspiration.

I loved it when Video Game Covers, Movie Posters and Album Covers were like this!
