Well, I offer to meet well-known forum members if he/she/it is near/at my town. (Even if the chances are very low.)
Yeah me too. I even had a friend from england visit me many years ago.
Thatās true. I would be willing to travel within Europe and make a mini-holiday out of it, but of course not everyone may have the time and money for that. Not everywhere has the same transport connections, and so on.
But yeah, itās a nice idea. If anyone is visiting the north of England, let me know
You donĀ“t happen to be a Geordie, do you?
No, not THAT one! IĀ“m talking about the Newcastle area!
Whey aye man!
Hehe, Iām not a Geordie, but I live near-ish to Newcastle (a 30-minute drive away). I went to university there.
Any suggestions for holidaymakers/visitors? Any important museum?
Did you know that in my town the āMuseum of Bavarian Historyā opens next year? And no one has an idea why here and not in munich! Big-ass, ugly building, too.
Munich hasnāt paid enough.
Yes, these are common today. Iām dreaming of a museum of āugly thingsā (in comparison to the design museums we have in Germany). We could present photos of ugly buildings there tooā¦
(Another off-topic is in the airā¦)
Not as long as we meet there!
Nah, not in a museum of Bavarian history. Thatās boring. What about the chocolate museum in Cologne? (And yes, you can eat chocolate there!)
Heh, I donāt think Iām going to split off-topics into more off-topics. Letās say that off-topic in the off-topic section is generally allowed.
Yeah, imagine we suddenly come back to the original topic, here!
Oh hell no! IĀ“d never suggest that!
I donĀ“t know the Oompa Loompas scare me!
Is that close to you, is that where you are?
We have quite a few free museums and art galleries. I would recommend the Great North Museum and the Discovery Museum, both of which have a wide range of exhibitions.
Newcastle is great for shopping and eating out. And the Quayside is amazing. There you will find the Millennium Bridge, which turns over to let ships pass underneath it and lights up at night, and a museum of quirky art called the Baltic.
Iāve been there!
Oh, and letās go to the Phantasialand theme park too!
Me and my friend were actually in Cologne the other day for Karneval, and we did check if both places were open. They werenāt, because of Karneval and winter.
You should have forced John Candy at gunpoint to let you in!
Hehe, I canāt even remember what the original topic was.
Some other impressive museum? Up here in northern Germany we have several beer museums.
Oh, there arenāt much of them around. But you should not jump into the chocolate fountainā¦
Phantasialand is still around? I went there 31 years ago. Is it same??
I was last there ten years ago.
Iāve sadly recognized that you find in most cities the same shops. Are in Newcastle the well-known brands or are there some (small) shops that you wonāt find anywhere else?
But your suggestions sounds nice and interesting! I will keep them and hope to be able to visit Newcastle in the near future.
What is quirky art?
Yes, on Karneval (= carnival) everything is different here - but only in the Rhine area.
But independently from that, most museums are closed on mondays in Germany.
Yes, itās still there. Itās one of the biggest theme parks in germany. They renovate, replace and add some attractions regularly. So the park today might be a bit different to the park you visited 31 years ago. (The last time when I was there, I was a kid, so I canāt say what has changed exactly. )
Itās mostly well-known brands, but thereās a few independent places. Two nice independent teahouses are Quilliam Brothers and Tea Sutra. Thereās also a cat cafe and a dog cafe, right next door to each other
Strange art and exhibitions. You never know what you will find.
One time there was a tunnel that you could walk through with television screens inside. Another time there were lots of dolls houses with faces on the outside walls. And sometimes, an exhibition is supposed to represent something (explained on a big panel on the wall), but it just looks like someone has collected some random objects together and put them on display - I find it quite funny. So when me and my parents see an object that looks slightly odd or out of place in real life, we joke that it will be the next Baltic art sculpture!
Thatās true. We were in Cologne from Friday to Wednesday, and I think the chocolate museum was closed the whole time, because of the large crowds of people. The cathedral was also boarded up
