So, it may be technically impossible to do? Wouldn’t that be a huge risk on this whole undertaking? I understand that Ron may be not against the idea, but is that enough to spend all the hours to record all these lines?
And step 2, after importing the audio in your own copy/installation, you should be able to upload the (huge) audio files somewhere with instructions for others to update their own copies (hence the “not pirating” part, as in "surely you aren’t thinking of putting up the complete game code somewhere…?)
In my -as ever- humble opinion, that sounds like a serious risk you have to solve before going into production mode, no matter the level of amateurism (in both meanings of the word). In comparison, fan text translations is something that is at least using a system that has been used and is proven during the actual production of the game and where the fileformat is “just” a reasonable sized spreadsheet. Not that the effort involved in that is to be understimated. See also this post on my MI fan translation project
Sushi, I understand your concern, your thoughts were like ours.
Since the project’s begin, we took this thing seriously.
The most difficult part is to record voices with a good quality. When we’ll have all the files, I am confident that the technical obstacles could be removed.
the first thing I noticed was the difference in ambience, mainly the reverb of the room. Especially on Cassie and Reyes this is apparent and distracting (“ruining” to use your words). You can always add reverb later, but removing it is not that easy. So record as “dry” as possible.
Cassie, Head ghost, Ray, Reyes and Willy sound too much treble (thin, missing mid/bass). Now, in Cassie’s case, that may not be an issue (as long as she’s on the radio anyway) as it sounds like an 1987 transistor radio. Especially for Ray and Reyes, being main characters with a lot of lines, I would look into getting a more balanced sound recording. Probably the different microphone quality is an issue, but also some (more) EQ is definitively needed here.
Lookalike2 sounds great! As does Ransome. But I’d choose lookalike2 in any contest
Overall, I think recreating the personalities of the different characters, i.e. the acting, is pretty impressive!
Thanks for your feedback!
Other than the microphone, we changed the actor for Reyes. Next time there should be no echo nor reverb.
Finally I got a moment to listen to this properly with headphones. Overall, taking in consideration how this was recorded, it sounds very good. So please take this feedback as nitpicking:
BORIS: The mic was a bit too close and you hear the “pop” effect. If you want to go to town, a DIY filter would do wonders.
CASSIE: There’s a bit of echo on this one.
If I have to list which I think were below the average of the overall quality then I would list: HINTTRON, CHUCK, RAY, REYES and WILLIE.
Also I noticed that the sampling frequency could be improved, it would be awesome if you guys could record at 44.1 KHz. Here’s a spectrogram of the file, ideally you want to see everything reaching 22Khz (the Nyquist freq. of a 44.1Khz recording, standard CD quality):
It’s hard for me to comment on the acting since I don’t speak Italian, but I thought Ransome was fantastic
Hope this helps.
I really don’t get your point. I’m fan-dubbing a game, I’m having a lot of sane good time, and the author of the game is explicitly “not against” it. What’s the “huge risk”? My aim is not to change my life, or my job. My aim is to do my best, and to have a lot of fun. And if I have fun, I’ll be sure my time won’t be wasted.
Anyway, even if I considered this project risky, I would have undertaken it anyway. No matter how much you study or how much passion you put into it. You can’t be sure to pass the exam.
It’s life, man.
no problem with you having fun with it. Au contraire, my friend. You’ll need to get lots of enjoyment out of it to see it through.
I just have the impression (correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s why I asked in the first place on the export/import/replace process) that you have not swapped out a single line of audio in the game, even just as a demonstrator. So the risk is that you’ll end up recording all those lines and never get to experience them in (part of) the game. Which is the goal, right?
Many of the things I think have already been said, in particular about recording quality. I have poor knowledge in that, so I’ll let the others speak with better words than mine.
I’m still stunned by the quality of Guga’s acting, and having heard lookalike2 many times it doesn’t change my mind, it increases my good opinion if possible.
It’s for that reason that I thing that you, Guga, given the high potential you have, you can do even better with Ransome!
Personally I think that you could increase his mocking badness in the tone.
I also love Dj Cassie, which is great and, if possible, she could be just a little bit acid in the tone.
Ema is good too and I’m sure we’ll hear the improvements he’s looking for which are certainly within his potential.
I also have always thought about Zak as the dubber for Reyes. They share that peculiar sentiment which is trust in people and future, that sometimes could seem a little bit naive but is an extraordinary source of energy and inspirational for other people! He has a gentle and very young voice too! I would be very happy to hear him as Reyes!
Thank you for your comment and concerns, but I think they’re not constructive.
Have some trust in us, if we decided to undertake this, that’s because we calculated the odds. And we’re up to deal with them.
You should be really into it, if you want to be defeatist. Now, please, can we move on to another subject?
I’ve got a “rolling” R myself (alveolar) but I can do a lot of the other R sounds too (fricative, uvular, and so on)
Japanese don’t roll their R as much as Italian, though. Just aim for a short Spanish R and you’ll be close.
Just aim for a short Spanish R and you’ll be close.
Pretty sure I did when saying things like “Agente Ray” or “Sayonara”.
If I have to list which I think were below the average of the overall quality then I would list: HINTTRON
That’s a speech synth software we can’t do much about the quality. But it’s also heard through a phone, so I suppose it can be accepted.
Lookalike2 sounds great! As does Ransome.
It turns out that my phone has the best microphone ever. I’m pretty surprised. So, for those who have a Samsung Galaxy S4, take on a career in voice acting
Personally I think that you could increase his mocking badness in the tone.
Thanks, I’ll work on it. I must say that I recorded that line while my daughters were sleeping in the same room it wasn’t the best setup for a swearing and yelling clown
Thanks to everyone for all the feedback we’ll work hard to reach the best possible quality. And to show those damn Germans that they might be more into adventure games than us Italians, but we’re more passionate. Wait, did I write that line aloud?
I also have always thought about Zak as the dubber for Reyes. […] I would be very happy to hear him as Reyes!
Well… even though I was a little reluctant, at the end the Reyes definitive actor… will be me!
The other pals told me more or less the same your reasons!
So the risk is that you’ll end up recording all those lines and never get to experience them in (part of) the game. Which is the goal, right?
IF we do a good job, I think we could have an italian voice in the game (why not?)
IF we don’t, we’ll have some material to tell our grandchildren in the future
In both cases, it’s a loveble experience!
BORIS: The mic was a bit too close and you hear the “pop” effect. If you want to go to town, a DIY filter would do wonders.
Thanks! Which software that picture comes from? Adobe Audition?
it would be awesome if you guys could record at 44.1 KHz.
You are right, I just noticed that on my mobile I can set the recording frequency, and it’s 22050 Hz by default. I switch it to 44100 Hz.
I suggest to all our actors to look into the recording software settings, there should be a line telling you which audio quality do you want. Please set it to “High” / “CD” / “44.1 Khz”.
Thank you!
to show those damn Germans…
You already miss Fifa World Cup, don’t you?
I’m actually a Germany fan when it comes to football and Switzerland, for obvious reasons.
So, for those who have a Samsung Galaxy S4, take on a career in voice acting
Well, now I have some serious career plans it seems!
Wait, did I write that line aloud?
No, no one can hear you…now think about your bank account*!
*joke shamlessly nicked from @PiecesOfKate
Do you mean “the future is not set” by Sarah Connor from Terminator 2?
Eheh, I’m more in the game!
