Your song-of-the-day, based on your current mood

The intro of this song always makes me think of the airport music in Zak McKracken.

Similar synth tones I guess.

Ahah that’s true!

The megahit “feel it still” by Portugal. the man has this very short SID-like synth part that always reminds me of The Last Ninja on the C64. (Or IK+ ?)
Enhanced by the lyrics “like it’s 1986 now”.

(Edit: actually it reminds me of the music of Total Eclipse on the C64)

Yeah, I hear what you mean. Those SID chips still sound good to me. Lightyears beyond the shrill PC speaker that came afterwards.

Possibly, but this old IBM PS/2 286 model I had in the late '90s included a fantastic PC speaker, with nice non-metallic audio and a volume control. It was night and day with the PC speaker in our Pentium 100 and Pentium 3, which were intended to be used with a Soundblaster or equivalent instead. There the PC speaker was just some kind of legacy support and error notification.

This video sounds (slightly) worse than I remember the IBM PS/2:

This also sounds worse than Monkey Island actually did:

I think this LGR video might actually capture the real sound:

tl;dr Most people seem to think of “PC speaker” as the cheapest things that can produce some sound but that needn’t be the case.

Of course, this would be the only music we’d hear coming from our father’s work computer back in the 80s

(Funny video as well)

According to Wikipedia:

A PC speaker is a loudspeaker built into some IBM PC compatible computers. The first IBM Personal Computer, model 5150, employed a standard 2.25 inch magnetic driven (dynamic) speaker.[1] More recent computers use a piezoelectric speaker instead.[2]

So that’s probably it. The PS/2 must’ve had a regular dynamic speaker, possibly the exact same model as those earlier IBM PCs, while (my) later computers had a piezoelectric speaker. And perhaps the Pentium 100 had a worse dynamic speaker or a better piezoelectric one? It definitely sounded better than the Pentium 3, if still a lot worse than the PS/2.

Incidentally, that source [1] there doesn’t support that “2.25 inch magnetic driven speaker” thing at all. It just says “built-in speaker”…

And of course LGR just came out with a video replacing a crappy PC speaker for a good one!

In Italy, there’s an evergreen song, from the 80s, played each year in this period of the year.

“L’estate sta finendo” (the summer is going over)

Here’s the song with English subtitles.
Enjoy!

I’ll go with this Mongolian metal:

Today, my favourite singer Max Pezzali made a new song, “In this town”, which is Rome.

Lyrics and footer notes:

It was better if I went down before Tiburtina (1)
we are one thousand and taxis only a dozen
then I am stuck in the ring road
you can also grow old at Prati Fiscali (2)
instead there’s a shortcut from Villa Borghese (3)
the taxi driver asks me: “are you from Milan?”
you root for the Inter (4) have been put badly
we are left with only the derby of the capital
however Tomba di Nerone is just in culandia (5)
“How did you end up there? Excuse me for the question”
I only answer “my heart took me there”
it chooses everything, joy and tears, even the neighborhood
who knows if tonight I meet my boar friend
which is not a nickname, it’s the animal itself
which is pleasant because he has a sad look
but he is happy to see me.

In this town
there is something that never makes you feel alone
even when I want to kick everything
it knows how to make itself beautiful and present with a good dress
and whisper in my ear that everything will be fine
otherwise, these dicks (6)
if it won’t pass
if it won’t pass.

Northern Rome, Southern Rome, Rome West, East
here you can live in the car as in Los Angeles
we understand you are from the north 'cause you drive like a loser
while the river flows slowly between paddle fields
the SH compete with the machines
Suv of 5 meters in streets that are always too narrow
better to be cooped up in your neighborhood
except Saturday when we all go for lunch at the beach
I have a friend who is in the EUR (7), but getting there is a journey
I have a friend at sea in the center but there is no parking
and he also has one in Trastevere (8) but it’s a traffic-limited area
but he is a friend and understands me when I arrive, I arrive.
alternative pariolini _(9), forced to be cleaned up
hard working people and well-dressed at school
three million people in this blender
that you can’t leave.

*In this town
there is something that never makes you feel alone
even when I want to kick everything
it knows how to make itself beautiful and present with a good dress
and whisper in my ear that everything will be fine
otherwise, these dicks
if it won’t pass
come up to the Gianicolo (10) to look at the city.

(1) Tiburtina is the Rome Train Station
(2) Prati Fiscali is a central Rome street
(3) Villa Borghese is a great park
(4) F.C. Inter, one of the 2 soccer teams from Milan
(5) in culandia = far far away
(6) these dicks, yes, he just sung these dicks!
(7) EUR = the most elegant discrict in Rome
(8) Trastevere is another roman district
(9) residentials of the high-ranking Parioli district
(10) Gianicolo is one of the seven hills of Rome, 88 meters high

November 9th, 1989. 30 years ago today. This is my song-of-the-day to remember the days preceding that event.

Well… listen to the first words of this song (after the first 50 seconds intro), to understand why it’s my song-of-the-day today.
